Another Virgin Question

OK, so I got awesome advice from dave on the "re-jet with new filter thread". Now I got a new problem. I just changed the petcock, new plugs, new wires, and new high flow air filter...

Now I have the carb backfiring? into the air cleaner housing. Not sure it is a backfire though, because there is no "popping" sound. It sounds more like somebody spitting. It sounds like a sharp, short exhale of air coming out of the carb and into the air cleaner.

This is happening on a 1999 883 sportster. I never had this happen before I changed out the parts listed above. Any suggestions? I need some help guys. Thanks.

Oh yeah, it tends to happen only in gear and right off of idle, low RPM's only. I feel a power surger, or lack thereof, when it spits.

I have the same thing happen on my 2002 Deuce on occasion, it's more of a sneeze, not a miss just off idle, and like you, low RPM's only! But mine is EFI!

sounds like you might have an intake leak. take carb cleaner and spray on your intake seals(the two that seal between head and intake, and the one from carb to intake) make sure not to get it near the aircleaner as it will give you false reading. if it changes the rpm when sprayed on the intake you have a leak.

Sounds like a carb fart. IF you dont have an intake leak, you need to rejet because you are running lean and that is BAD!!! if you have an EFI, you need to remap. That is why I have a carbed bike. EFI is reliable, but a lot more money to tune.

your a little lean now.
when I ran carbed bikes I would run 2 set of jets.
one set for spring and fall and 1 set for summer .just me though as I couldnt stand the spitting carb.
