Sportster Pipes Not too Loud
I generally go to the Touring Family Forum for info about my RK. I'm getting ready, however, to pick up my 09 Iron 883 to add to the family.
On the Touring forum there is a consensus about what pipes give the deepest rumble, best performance, and are still not so loud as to be obnoxious. I haven't found one here.... so far anyway.
Any consenus about Sportster exhaust that are deep and not too loud?
Thanks

I had Rush on my 07 1200 and loved them. I think that they offer 4 different size baffles for Sportys and can be got off of ebay cheaper than any dealer. They are also offering black mufflers and pipes too.

IMHO You can beat the sound and price of Cycle Shack tapered slip ons. You can get them for about $150 a pair, they sound awesome, and I've never had any problems with the finish. I've even painted them black with high temp paint and they looked like factory black pipes.

I am with Gunnysgt. I installed Cycle-Shack tapered Slip -ons on my 04 XL1200R. I was always happy with the sound and they looked good. They jetted cleanly, I used a 45 low speed jet and the needle out of an "88" 1200 I believe. I have since moved up to a FXDC, but I still miss my Impact Blue Sporty.

As to the CS slip ons, I noticed when looking up, there are sizes from 1 3/4" to 3".
Different sizes seem to run from $150-$300.
Are the cheapest ones most on here suggest?
Would they be considered an agressive tone?
Thanks for your input guys. I'm about a 2 hour drive away from picking up the Iron this morning.

although this is a great forum...try this one. It is solely dedicated to Sportys and there is a whole section on exhausts.

Atlantaallen, I bought Cycle Shack slip ons on ebay for less than 90 dollars and love the sound on my 2005 1200 custom.

Hate to do this but I don't like the sound of the cycle shack slip ons.I think they're loud and don't do justice to the sweet sound the bike has out of the box.You can't even leave your house without your neighbours knowing.I just bought a 06 883 with 530 original miles on it for my wife and the guy had cycle shack mufflers on it ,first thing I did is put on the screeming eagle slip ons on.My opinion is stock exhaust on a loud scale would be 2 out of 10.Screeming eagle 3 cycle shack 8.5 just my two cents worth.

Well, I picked up the Iron and rode it 3 hours home. I've got to tell you I was impressed.
I weigh 250 and used to riding a Valkyrie or rodded Road King.
The Iron did just fine. It's got plenty of low end power, but doesn't have that kick above 70.
This thing is a brilliant execution of an inexpensive bike. No plastic and doesn't look or feel cheap.
The stock pipes just don't work for me and I'm afraid the SE pipes are still too restrictive compared to other pipes to justify the expense. Guess I'll keep watching and listening.
In the cheap CS sip ons, I found turn outs, turned down, and tapered. The tapered are the hardest to find for me right now, but I did find them at Dennis Kirk for $169. Ones on eBay are cheaper, but I couldn't find the tapered.
Are the new slip ons hard to install since I now have to be mindful of O2 sensors?
Thanks guys.
Allen

pidge, no offense taken on your reply, I like to set off my neighbors car alarms on the way to work in the morning. You are right though, cycle shacks do not have the low rumble, just alot of noise

I have a set of Rush slip ons for my nightster. 2" baffles, I like them but you might find them a bit obnoxious.

I received my Cycle Shack Tapered slip ons today
and I'm not sure I'm going to put them on or return them.
Looking inside the cycle shack slip on, that's the closest thing to a drag pipe with out being one that I've seen. It's a diverter to provide some back pressure, but there is not really a baffle.
I can't try them because then I couldn't send them back.
I'm used to V/H slip ons on a RK that sound full bodied, but that don't sound like a drag pipe.

Anything you put on is going to be loud, and your gonna get less mileage. WHich Im sure isnt to good for long distance riding.
Thats why I still have the stock ones on, and Im getting 50mpg

Try taking the baffles out of the stock pipes. Ones I've listened to sound pretty good to me but not unbearable.

I sent the cycle shacks back and drilled out the stock baffles. That should tide me over till the first service then I'll probably get Rush slip ons. Thanks.
