? on my 2006 883L want's to kick back on after kill.....
Hi, I have a 2006 883L I bought a few weeks ago w/only 977 miles. It seems to me that even after being warmed up it idles fast. I was guessing that I could get 150 miles on 3.3 gal? bike cut out on me at 126, drifted into gas station still had gas in tank. Got home and when killed engine it kicked back on then off. Also "popping sound" when got on throttle good. Sound came from engine area not pipes. Noticed my oil cap was popped up but don't know if my leg just hit it. Oil's fine just changed when bought. Bike sat at dealer since last Aug thougt maybe old gas. Next time got gas I put in middle grade, bike seemed o.k. till yesterday rode 20+ miles and when killed engine, same thing. Acted like it wanted to keep running for instant then shut off and popping noise. WTF? I really like the bike but something isn't right. Carbs? Anyone have similiar issues? Starting to wonder if I made a mistake. I plan on keeping this one and working w/it. HELP

I'd run the top grade fuel til I got it figured out. (might be your only problem).
If it's a carb bike, it wouldn't hurt to drain the float bowl. Likely has some buggers in it from sitting too long.
stick with the good grade fuel for now. BP 93 or Shell are my 2 favorites.

04-06 models are infamous for "coughing" at low speed accelleration. my bride had hers back to the dealer 4 times for it under warranty. She also spent some money on some items that were suggested might help. It's better, but it's never been totally cured. They fixed it in 07 with EFI.

I hate to ask this. But does the bike have reserve(guessing it does)? Were you switched to reserve when you coasted into the gas station?

yeah I have reserve, thought I'd use that when my gas light came on, but never did. Maybe it dosn't when gas gets low. It just cut off, so I drifted in, what I don't get is that I still had gas in tank?

I believe the remaining gas was your reserve, 06 883L models do not have a low fuel warning light (wife's does not). She has run hers out, switched to reserve, and started no problem. Did you try switching over to reserve?

no, didn't switch to reserve, just filled her up. Does your wife have a 3.3 tank? If so how many miles can she go before she has to switch to reserve? I figure I went 126.6 right before it cut off on me that time.

The reserve should be about 1/2 gallon, of the total 3.3 gallon capacity. You went 126 miles on 2.8 gallons, or 45 mpg, = 148.5 range on 3.3 gallons. That's not terrible, considering your bike is barely broken in, and it's likely you probably were primarily city driving?
The range really bothered my wife, so I switched the tank to the 4.5 gallon, she still wants to top it off every time she sees a gas station.
Go figure.

Hi EBMomma,
I have an '06 883XL with no engine or exhaust mods, that also sat for 2 years before I got it with 500 miles on the clock. I ran 1/2 can of SeaFoam through the gas tank to clean out the fuel system. Changed the fluids and oil filter and adjusted the idle mixture screw to richen it up a tad. The scoot still farts at times through the carb, but not too much to affect overall performance. Once in a while, after a long ride and hot, engine will fire (pop) a few times after shut down. I don't worry about it, since it is common with carbed engines to do this. I run 85 octane, since I run at 6000 ft elevation and have no problem with engine knock.
Have a good ride!
