Odometer

Friend has 07 soft tail, I have 08 1200c. We filed up at same time and 0 the trip meters. End of the day filled up again, each bike used almost the same fuel 3.5 3.6 gallons. However his trip meter showed 175.5 miles and mine showed 180.6 miles.

Why the 5 mile difference.

6 speed on the soft tail allowed much better high speed economy, way bigger bike and same mpg.

my guess is that one of you has an almost new tire & the other has a worn tire. Or someone has a non stock size tire.

More like normal acceptable variations in odometers.
Standard odometers have allowable variation in certified accuracy.

Not sure about the 08's, but the first rubbermount Sportsters in 04 had an issue with the ICM, and one of the side effects was the speedometer reading fast. Mine read about 2 to 3 mph fast at 70 mph, which added about a tenth of a mile for each mile actually driven. There was/is a service bulletin on this. After the ICM was reflashed, the speedometer was much more accurate. One way to check your speedometer accuracy is to use a GPS on each of the bikes to see how each one compares to the speed shown on the GPS unit.
