Typical Sportster range?

Hi there,

I'm planning a group ride, and I want to make the fuel stops reasonable for Sportster-riding members of the group.

What kind of distance would you recommend as a safe margin to plan my fuel stops?

Thanks,
Darrin.

What size is the Sporty tanks that you're worried about? 3.3 or 4?

I get 48 - 49 MPG on the highway, 40'ish in town.

120 miles works for me just about any type of driving. It leaves me at least 1 gallon as a 'buffer'....but I have the 4gallon tank.

I have a 1200C with the big tank, and I turned 196 miles city driving. Granted I used up my reserve tank. Highway you will expect better numbers. I would say between 180-190 to be sure, if you have the big tank. Also, thats not hammering on the throttle.

I agree, with Bobby... I "can" go 216 miles on the calculator 48mpg x 4.5gallon tank, but I rather have a planned stop at 120ish and if that slips to 150-170 well there's my nice buffer.

The furthest I rode straight was 186 highway miles. There ain't much of a "oops can't find a gas station" buffer at that point. I'd rather not push it that far again....

Plus I don't like to iron-butt it. I like to take it slow and easy...(but not that slow).

Just my 2 cents....

I agree, the last trip I went on I planned for stops every 100 - 110. I have an 883 with the 3.5 tank. The farthest I went before reserve was 131.
