anyone know 100% accurate the H P of a 1200 sportster,

compared to the 96 c. i. V-Twin? stock no mods, of course.

Can't help with the Sportsters.
I took an average of 6 dynos from various magazines on the 07 96" bone stock motors.
66hp/80tq all rear wheel.

I don't know about the HP but the Sportster will eat the 96 ci's lunch.

According to thier site they show torque ratings 2008 models
touring bike 96.2 ft lbs @3500
dyna 91.0 ft lbs @3125
1200 79 ft lbs @4000

I personally know my '05 XLC 1200 will do 110 mph in fourth gear. The LEO's were impressed. Especially after I said I was only in 4th. After showing me the radar and verbally chastising me, they let me go.......Both guys owned BT's.

when i was shopping my 07 softail, the salesman said the 96 was quicker

than the sporster. geez, i was going bigger anyhow, he still felt the need

to B S me. Compulsive I guess

I can't impress anybody, I've only hit 100 on either bike, sftail/sprtr

I have a 04 XL1200C and even though the speedo goes to 120mph, it keeps on pulling. I went passed the mark and let off the throttle, and it took a few seconds to come back to 120. Don't let anyone tell you a sportster a whimpy bike!

I got a 96 1200 and at 80 mph I'm reving 3.5 rpm. How high can I go without blowing anything up. What rpm is ok without hurting the motor?

hp and torque to weight, The sporty definatly has the edge. do da math.

It would seem to me if the motor is running at all you would be causing wear.(More friction more wear)
So... if ya havn't messed with the ignition, I think the rev limit is either 5500 or 5800. Thats supposed to protect the motor. I'd say, as long as ya aint stayin on the limit for extended periods, or every time you ride, yer motor should handle it. For awhile

Thanks Jakace. Now what is the normal RPM at 80 MPH for the sportster? 3500 is where mine wants to sit. And is it safe to stay at 4000?
