04 Sportster 1200r Timing

A good friend of mine has a stock, carbed 04 sportster 1200R, that pings real bad under a load. good fuel helps, but still way too much ping. i'd like to help him, but i'm not sure about checking, or setting ( retarding ) the timing and come up with a good tune up for him. i want to start with backing the timing off a bit, along with checking CCP, among other things. i would appreciate any help you could give us, before he kills the motor from ping from timing issues. thanks much THEDRIVER
