Kickstand Spring Installation - help!
I have an '05 custom fatboy and I need to replace my kickstand spring. The bike has been lowered, and the spring on their now is worn to the point where the kickstand will drag when turning corners, etc. I have purchased a new spring, but for the life of me cannot extend it enough to have it line up on the mount hole on the stand itself. There must be a trick to this, what is the best way to get enough leverage to get this done? What makes it hard is the angle you have to achieve with the spring hook to get it into the hold on the stand.

I read in cycle world back in the early 80's to use a roll of nickles place one between each spring coil. I have used it serveral times and it makes it a snap
Let me know how it works....

I usually take the kickstand off and it still takes a little manuevering to get back on but it is a lot easier to do.
A little tip that is forgotten a lot!!!!!!!Grease the kickstand. With whatever your preference. But it will snap back really nice then.

well, i just hooked a screw driver on each end of the new spring and tried to stretch it with another person and it is extremely difficult to pull it enough to get a nickel, dime, or quarter into a groove. Also, to the other post, we did try to take the kickstand off the mount itself but it still meant the spring had to be stretched at least an inch to get it back into the mount properly. Could not make that work either. There must be an easier way!

When I replaced my foward controls on my FXSTSI we had to replace the kickstand spring. I found it much easier to hook the spring on while the 3 bolts were disconected fromt he frame on the forward controld the stretch the whole fwd control over to line up the holes. I hope this helps you.
Manual says the same...
Apply loctite to three screws holding on the fwd controls
Attach spring to bracket and jiffy stand (hook spring side connected to bracket facing upwards)
Attach shifter linkage
check for proper operation
This means to change the spring you must remove the fwd control bracket which is a very simple 3 screws and your shifter linkage. (one bolt)

Do NOT have to take off the forward controls.
- Remove top nut holding kickstand in.
- Lower kickstand, then turn it TOWARDS THE FRONT
- Attach spring, reverse steps to put it back together.
I've done 3 or 4 of these, this has worked everytime

interesting. I will need to try this later when a friend is over to help but it would appear this makes the ends the spring hooks on to a little closer together to I dont have to stretch it so far. Its still a bugger to stretch it at all.

I used a pair of vice grips to reinstall my spring after installing extended controls. Took a bit of pull, but worked just fine.

ok everyone, the new spring is on! The penny gimmick did the trick, worked like a charm. As someone else quoted -- worth the price of admission....thank you all.

This is the correct procedure. It is also the easiest. Just forgot to add that you need to remove the lock plate from the top of the kickstand before moving it forward.
