Question Are gas caps different from Late 96 on?

I've seen in the books that a Late 96 to 00 Big twin uses a different set of gas caps then my 87. What's the difference? Mine are left and right, vented and non-vented. I got a set of 98 tanks for my 87 and want to know if I MUST change the caps too or why they want me to?
Thanks,
Mike

I think the newer bikes only have a gas cap on the right side, the left side is decorative or in some contains the fuel gauge.

I think it has to do with the lip around the edge of the hole. I had these cheezy gas Kuryakin caps that where supposed t look like air craft style. It said for 96 and up don't use O-ring, for 95 and older, use it.
