06' Heritage Classic......Questions

I'm new to the harley thing and am going to be picking up and 06' heritage classic soon, and have some questions.
1. My wife is looking for a different passenger pillion..something a little wider for the long trips.does anybody besides harley offer a replacement ?
2. Who makes the best passenger floorboards, as far as looks, and cost ?
3. Im going to be changing the exhaust to make it actually sound like a harley, can that be acheived by just swapping out the mufflers, or should i change out the whole exhuast ? if i just change the exhaust for now, and not mess with the intake, will the F.I. still have to be re-mapped ?
Thanx for all your help

hey there 06heritage...

I can only offer some advice on your first question. I had a seat from Mustang Seats on my last bike (not a Harley) and I know they sell some for our ride. It was very comfortable.

As far as your last question, I know you can just put slip-ons on to change the sound, but I don't know if you have to remap the EFI.

Enjoy the scoot when you get it! It's a fantastic ride!!!

Go with the Mustang seat, my wife is very comfortable on the one we have on our 03 heritage. If all you are going to do is change the mufflers and not mess with the intake you don't have to remap. If you have a little extra cash, I would definetley do the stage 1.

If you change the mufflers and don't adjust the amount of air intake your bike takes in at the same time, for instance an upgrade to the stage 1, you will get lots of sputter and a loss of low end torque. Essentially what you are doing is allowing the air to escape more freely than it can suck it in, thus starving the engine for air causing it to caugh and wheeze in the low end of the rpm's. Witha efi you need to do the stage one and have it remapped, if you have a carborated bike then you need to rejett the carbs to prevent this serious loss of low end power.

The only thing I am worried about is pissing people off if the downward pipes blow objects off the road up on them. Is this a big problem or am I over thinking this whole thing.

You may want to look into Caliber pipes. I have them on my 05 Heritage and they sound great while claiming to offer 25 percent more hp...I think thats a stretch but there is a noticeable difference. Caliber is the first 4 step pipe offered for a Harley. What I like about them is that if you rip on the throttle they are as loud as any pipe on the market but as you get to cruising speed they turn into a soft rumble that doesn't alert the cops or annoy anyone.and they have a full heat shield. I love these pipes so much that I just ordered a set for my SE2 Fatboy as well. Everybody who has heard my bike has commented on how bad ass it sounds.

Ron,

Beautiful!!! I have the same exact bike (minus your pipes). It was the color that got me right off the bat. Enjoy it! I love mine!

help for a newbie

Greetings to all members of this forum.
I'm new around here. I had a BMW 1150RT for 2 years, before falling in love for a Heritage. This is a all new world for me...
Anyway, I'm disappointed with the sound of the stock mufflers of my FLSTCI, which, I believe, is a common complaint. Someone told me it could be improved by knocking out the center plug of these mufflers. How do you do it? What do you gurus think of this? Forgive me if this matter has already been discussed.

I have the vance and hines longshots, wife has big shots. her bike makes mine sound like a kids toy...
If I were going to do it again, and i might, I'd go with the big shot longs. Deeper rumble, not alot louder, but deeper.

Softail Heritage Running Very Hot

I have an 04 Heritage and the heat coming off the oil tank is almost unbearable. Has anyone else had this problem and did you find a cure. I'm told oil coolers only work when moving but don't do much in traffic. Help I'm frying.

Do you have a temperature gauge on the oil pan/dipstick? We'd probably need to know what temp you're running at in order to tell you whether there's a problem or not. Mine gets close to unbearable in stop and go, slow commuter traffic, when it's over 80 degrees out. If yours hasn't shut down, I'd guess it's just the normal twin cam temps. Is this "unbearable" heat occuring only when you're going slow, stop and go, or even at higher speeds?

Unbearable Heat

The problem is in stop and go traffic. I live in south florida and it has been well into the high 90's. If you are experiencing the same conditions at 80 degrees then I guess its normal. Only thing to do is trade to an Ultra Classic. I heard that the oil coolers only work at highway speeds and then it isn't a problem.
