Hand grips - how to remove?

This may seem like a stupid question, but how do I go about removing the existing hand grips on my 1998 Fat Boy? I'm in the process of "chroming out" the hand controls (clutch bracket, MC bracket, housings, etc.). Also, any advice on replacing the Master Cylinder bracket?

Thanks!

The right side grip will come off as you disassemble the switch box, if you have first loosened the throttle and idle cables. There are two little brass cable-end bushings in there. Very easy to lose.
The left side, you'll probably have to cut and peel off. Depends on whether or not it was glued in place.

The right side will come off by loosening the screws on the control. For the left side, if you're lucky, you can twist it off. If not, you can cut it off (assuming that it's rubber).

This site has some information on making a tool to allow you to remove a hand grip without cutting it off. Haven't tried it yet, but plan too next week when I change out my handlebars.

arb1028, do a search on this site. I think I've seen some 5 or 6 different threads on this very subject in the past week.

But I have a question. Why do you want to save these stock grips?? They have no value. If you want to replace 'em I'll send you about 10-15 pair. I'd just take a knife and cut the left one off. The right one is a little different but can be done with little or no effort. I posted, a couple times, on how to get 'em off with a mini-blind.

Oh, I don't want to keep the stock grips. I'll probably throw them away.

Thumbs up Removing hand grips

I changed my handlebars and wanted to reuse my custom grips that I had bought. I almost broke down and bought a new pair for $60 because I couldn't get the grip that was glued on off. I asked around a bit and was told to soak the grip in hot water. I soaked it for about 30mins and it twisted right off.

Worked it loose with a screw driver and blew it off with compressed air. Or you can just cut it down and peel it off.

you need the genuine H-D synthetic grip remover to get the left grip off. if you cut it off, or use any other method, you will immediately void your warranty.

btw, now would definitely be a good time to buy a service manual if you don't already have one... now go cut that left grip off.

I've successfully used compressed air injected under the grip on other bikes to remove them.

I use compressed air with a needle for blowing up balls and a screw driver.

For the left grip, use a thin strip of metal (old hacksaw blade with the teeth ground off). Slide the metal strip under the grip, spray between grip and handle bar with WD-40, wait 10 minutes, and twist off.

Use spray brake cleaner to remove the WD-40 for reinstallation.

Regards,

Bill

I removed mine tonight while changing bars. Used compressed air. Worked very well. No damage to grip.
