SeaDog wants to know Dino or Syn?
Headwinds, Tradewinds, Harley Billet Headlight

I just bought the new Harley Billet Headlamp and need some input from those who have already installed one or it's equvilent. The directions say to remove gas tank and unplug the wiring harness. After reading through the entire directions, it appears to me that this may not be necessary since the end of the harness under the tank isn't the end you have to feed through the headlamp being installed. For those of you who have been through this operation, what did you do or advise? Thanks.

When I installed my light, I cut the wires just behind the connector for the bulb. I pulled the wires out of the old light bucket, and put them through the new one. That was no easy task, let me tell you. Once in the new bucket, I installed the lamp connector back to the the harness, and works fine. It may be better to do like the instructions state, but I'm a lazyass sometimes, and take the easier way. Good luck to you, and post pics when it is done.

When I put my Headwinds on I unpluged the wires from the light bulb plug , and pulled the rubber gromet, wire and all out of the bucket. Upon reassembly, I had to lube it up to get it back in the little hole in the back of the headwinds(hope my wife doesn't read this!). Then reassemble the Molex plug.
If you do it the way HD says to, time can be saved by just sliding the tank back. If it is empty , and the front and rear bolts are off. It can be slid back far enough to disconnect the plug, no removal necessary!

I figured it could be done without removing the tank - Thanks for the feedback!

why did you have to re-bend the retainer ring? I did the install on my 04 fxsti and it took me right around 45 mins to do the whole install? The only part that was a little tricky was getting the retaining ring to line up and center the headlight itself.

What size is the Harley Billet shell? Is it 5 3/4", 7", or 4 1/2". I am trying to compare it with Tradewinds and Headwinds shells.

Did the same thing on the Low Rider. I de-pinned the socket and pulled the wires out of the shell one at a time. Remember to disconnect the ground. If you can't get the spade connectors through the hole in either shell. Cut them and soldier new ones and they'll clip right back into the socket. Also be sure to mark which wire goes where.
