Misfire & Fuel Starvation after warmup

I have a 1994 Softail Heritage classic with no enhgine or exhaust modifications.

The bike starts fine. After about 5 minutes of riding the engine starts to sputter and wants to conk out. Opening the throttle does nothing. I have to pull to the side of the road and let it die and wait about a minute and then restart. After that the engine runs fine.

I also have to keep the choke on slightly even when the engine is hot to keep the idle up or it will stall.

I don't ride a lot and the bike can stay in the garage for a month or so sometimes and I have the battery on trickle charge.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? thanks

could be old gas , clogged jets in the carb , bad seals on the carb blocked tank vent , vapor lock alot of different things it could be , you may want to try some carb cleaner or seafoam to see if that helps .

Halloo. I'd check the intake manifold seals too. With motor running, spray some WD40 or some spray you can direct (ya know, can with a nozzle tube) at the intake/head junction, and see if the motor speeds up or slows down. Also, don't know if yours has one, but if it uses a vacuum type fuel-cock, you might have a bad diaphragm. Let us know what you find.

Sounds like dirt/water in the fuel system. I'd be checking the fuel tap and carb for any foreign matter that may have found it's way in there. Having to keep the enrichener on slightly sounds like a fuel blockage or alternatively as others have said an air leak somewhere. Good luck.

pull the bowl and clean your jets, make sure the the accel pump port is clean also while in there, this ethanol crap wreaks havoc in carbs that sit with fuel in the bowl, swing petcokk over the rez and see if it does the same thing??? in 94, im sure u dont have vacuum petcokk..old carb, she deserves a cleanin anyways
