Softail Oil cooler installation?

I have a 08 FXSTC, and I was going to put a oil cooler on it over my christmas break, but was just wandering about the installation. I'm planning on buying one of the HD super premium units, and was wanting to know if there is any electrical work involved in hooking one up, and what and where do the oil lines hook up to, for the cooler ? Thanks in advance

No electrical. It goes on the front forks and usually has an adapter that mount between the oil filter and oil filter baseplate.

You can find installation instructions online here that should give you a general idea of whats involved.

I was looking at that cooler too. Does mounting it on the downtubes make sense? It seems like it would block airflow to the engine as well as blow hotter air from the cooler on the engine. Do these really do any good where they mount? I'm thinking a low mount would be better. Any advice?

The cooler needs air passing through it to be effective just as the engine cooling fins do. Some companies make a small fan to mount behind the cooler to move air when stopped. Never tried these so can't comment on how well they work. I use a Lenale engine fan for emergencies, seems to help some.

Look in to these.
There are different options and different prices.
You decide which is best for your bike.

I've got one, and had it on for several years now. Easy install, and it works great.

The temps in Southern California get far above 90*... had many days riding in heat upward of 110*. The oil cooler certainly helped keep the engine temps down to a manageable level.

The cooler doesn't radiate a lot of heat, so it doesn't increase temps at the front of the engine. It also doesn't block the airflow to the fins.

I like where it is mounted, as it is out of the way and protected from damage where a lower mount point might be susceptible.

I've been using the low mounted 4 row Jagg with their adapter and no thermostat since I bought my bike.
Works great.
Was concerned at first about road debris punching a hole in it but after 52K miles i've had no problems.

I run the UltraCool on mine. I did have to tap the electrical as this unit has a fan that comes on at a certain temp to really cool the bike. I also like how the UC mounts as opposed to the other models. It fits right in between the down tubes so it does not stick out like a sore thumb like most oil coolers do.

about the Ultra Cool; read this concerning the "oil adaptor ": " opens @ 180°F and closes @ 220°F"
It that thermostat closes at 220° !!!!!! the oil no longer passes through the cooler... that sounds contra-productiv. anyone from Ultra Cool???

It doesn't radiate alot of heat? Can you expound on that idea. I mean, if it doesn't radiate alot of heat when the oil is 250 the cooler isn't working. You can easily feel the heat coming off of one of these coolers. You might have a bad tstat in yours.

No way I'd mount a cooler like the Softails mount. It's definitely blocking air flow to the front cylinder and tossing any heat it radiates on it as well.

Been running coolers down low in the front for years and never any damage.

I just bought a Jagg 6 row for my Heritage. It's the 6 row low mount. What a mistake that was. I figured because they had been in the cooler business for a while it was a safe purchase. They really screwed the pooch on this one. I'm hoping the quality is better than the mounting system because the mounts suck. I wish I would have went with the HD cooler instead of Jagg. Jagg might be fine for some models but the low mount on a Softail, heritage anyway, sucks. Where it mounts is right in front of the wiring and the channel that protects the wires. With all thats behind it I doubt much air will flow through it without making some extra mods. It's a real nightmare. So much for Jagg being so great. Glad to hear yours is working well for so long.

I have the Jagg 6 row on my FLH, I have had none of the problem you listed, to me the cooler has been great, far better than the HD unit.

Seems like a relatively simple install, but how does the original oil filter mount come out? Is it just threaded in?
