Noise from motor

I've recently noticed a noise at idle that sounds like its coming from underneath the front of the gas tank. Its not a ticking or knocking. Its almost like a low churning sound. I only notice it at idle. I can almost feel it more then I can hear it. The bike runs as strong as ever, nothing seems wrong. I just wasn't sure if I should be concerned. Any ideas?

Check the mounts for the fuel tanks, mine made a strange noise that was eliminated by replacing the rubber mount parts (I have the old style dual tanks).

It has a mechanical noise/feel to it. Its almost like something pumping/churning/clunking. Can't explain it much better. Could it be the gears? It's not an overwhelming noise by any means I'm just trying to figure out what I'm hearing and feeling. And I only notice it at idle,

Sound travels. Could be cam gears, primary chain, engine or tank mounts, fuel pump. Whip out the old stethoscope and start touching things till you isolate it.

I have that whirling noise (09fxstc). What the hell is that? I've searched around but could'nt find a definate answer. I've read valve train noise, cams, primary but if you know what it is I'd really appreciate the answer.

aint thatt the truth. suspect a too-tight primary chain. its worse if you lug.

Amazed at how quickly a stethoscope lets you pinpoint the sound.

I've went to a hardware store. Bought a piece of clear plastic hose. 4-5 ft long. One end to stick in my ear, other end to touch parts to narrow down where the noise was comming from. Dave

My bike was making a grinding noise, every once in a while. Then it became constant, so I shut it off and later tried to start it and it wouldn't. Had it towed to my indy he pulled off the primary cover and the conpensator nut was loose.
Back on the road in 1/2 hour and $50.00 later.

I bet you're dealing with a loose compensating sprocket. Sounds just like what I was dealing with some time back.

Amped up my motor similar to yours, broke it in then took it to the dyno guy who ran the crap out of it during the tune so hard that the
screws vibrated out of the end caps of the hand grips.

The next morning when I started up could hear a low level rumbling/knocking seemingly from under the tank. Eventually ended up pulling the primary and I could unscrew the compensating nut without even locking the primary chain.

The compensator nut was loose. Tightened it and the whirling noise is gone.

when it comes to my bike I am nervous about getting into mechanical repairs myself. But it seems to check the compensator nut would be relatively easy. could you walk me through this and i mean really step by step walk me through this so I can check this out so I can breathe a little easier. Thanks

I just started getting a "tinking" noise - add my .2c

01 Fatboy, 23K miles, mostly stock with the (argh) stage-1 eagle pipes, chip and intake manifold/cleaner upgrade. Note: I ride like a bat outta hell and run my bikes very VERY hard 100% of the time - remember this bit for later.

Last several months I've noticed a "tinking" sound at level RPM, usually fairly high rpm. I thought it was from the rocker boxes, hard to tell as sound does/will travel throughout the motor and I can only hear it when riding - not reving it in the driveway. It's not a knocking or dull sound, not a normal noise if there was rocker/rod/etc issues.

Noticing it was 3k miles over the primary tensioner check, I pulled the inspection plate and noticed a little wear - maybe 1/8" on the shoe. Hard to tell exact chain play (5/8"-7/8") through the inspection plate but I guestimate I'm at or just past max play.

The adjuster is about maxed too with only a couple more little itty bitty slots left. Fricking shop manual says you can adjust this through the inspection hole - NOT. I bought a primary gasket today and was thinking about pulling the primary cover tomorrow BUT with this much slop in the chain and almost maxed out on the tensioner and the shoe at almost new condition - I'm thinking I stretched the chain. Even at 23K miles I guess it's possible with my riding habits (9 years and I'm still trying to wheelie this thing).

So

Tonight I was chatting with a pardner who's had lotta bikes - still does. He had a "tinking" sound on his Classic a while back. Did all the stuff I did plus he pulled the rocker covers - all was good.

Knowing sound travels he started checking elsewhere and ended up pulling the cams out and found the lobes just about GONE. That was where he was getting his "tinking" sound as it traveled all over the engine (through pushrods etc).

Anyone else know about this kind of issue?

Cheers,
bb
