New guy with gas question

Hello to all - New guy here....just signed up.
I am getting a FXSTI very soon. 2004. Got a sportster now and love it, but getting a softail on a deal. Wondering why premium gas is required if the compression ratio is lower than my 883( calls for regular 87 octane)??? Was told it may be the timing or the heat the engine runs at. Anybody can fill me in on this?
Thank you..........Pete/MS
ps: What oil filter you all run?

ps: I put this in a sticky yesterday....think wrong place.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the softail! I have an 04 standard also.
I know a few people who run regular gas with out issues, but I just stick with premium.
I use the HD filter, works fine. Do some reading in the oil forum on that subject and
if you feel brave, post a question in there...LOL

Thanks, Phat
Appreciate the info. I am gonna make another post about wheels.
You got some nice ones on your bike. Maybe you can set me straight on wheels.

I just figure... after paying $20k (out the door) for my FLHTC, I wasn't going to quibble over the gas.

Everybody I know runs the premium gas.

Pete,

My wheels are Performance Machine. But take a look at R.C. Components. They are now
offering a 6 or 7 year warranty! If you know anything about chrome wheels, I don't know how they can do that.
Not that anything is wrong with PM wheels, just with
that warranty I would take a good look at them to start.

Thanks for the info...
I tried a new post but something happened.....
Anyway, I may want to get some stock cast wheels to replace the wire spoked ones on the softail. Phat....not talking custom...some HD wheels, off another model, I guess...that will fit on the softail. Can you tell me what to look for?
I am going to need a set of tires on it. Would rather go with tubeless if the wheels can be had reasonably.
Thanks Again Pete
