Best years for an older Heritage
I've got the bug, looking into getting a older Heritage to tinker with. In your opinion what are the better years?

I have never heard that there is a particularly bad year for a Heritage Softail. It's really a lot more about the condition of the bike afaik.

Maybe a little more information would be helpful. Older covers a lot of territory. Are you looking for a TC or an EVO heritage. I don't know much about the evos, but have heard that the '02s are the last of the Timkin bearing TCs and are desirable. To me an '02 is "older" for a daily rider, but you mentioned tinker. A first year Heritage is what, about '84, '85, '86. Gotta be an evo and since they didn't change much in those days, they're probably all pretty good. All depends on whether you're looking for a low mileage top condition bike or a project . . . .

I had a 1989 that I was very happy with. Just keep looking and you will know when you found it. It'll just jump out at ya. Good luck

I'm riding a 1989 FLST right now and haven't experienced issues with it. There seems to be a lot of bikes just sitting in garages getting older but not gathering any miles. Good luck!

I'm keeping an eye out for an 02 Heritage project bike because of the engine. The rest is a wash to me.

IMHO, if you are content with stock and not building the top end, you should be fine. If you build it, then convert the bottom at the same time.
