Frame horns bent

2002 fxsts .Got hit from behind at red light. Don't know if they can be straightened or a bent frame will make it a total w/ the ins. co. BUT- on most wide tire kits the frame horns are cut off and wider struts are bolted on, just wondering if new stock struts could support a stock fender without the frame horns.

Can anyone with the Heartland kit comment on the strut differences or why the don't need frame horns to support the fender?

I will take a guess at it . I think that most of those wide tire kits limit you to solo riding. The fender being supported isnt really the issue, it the other set of butt cheeks that need the support. Like I said Im not sure about it, Im just guessing.

Here's a link to a rear fender I'm contemplating using since I put a Deuce rim with a 180 on it. It requires cutting off the horns and comes with it's own external struts.

I would think you would be able to have a passenger on it. Anybody used this style fender before?

Stock fender struts are stamped steel and need the horns for support. The struts used in the Heartland kits and other kits are milled billet struts, and therefor very strong. They don't need the horns for support. If you look you will see the base of the struts from the wide tire kits are pretty thick. Heartland kits and others can support passengers no problem. I would not recommend using stock stamped struts without horns, even if it's just supporting the rear fender. It will vibrate and move.
