Is 42K miles alot for a bike?
I bought a used 03 heritage classic with 42k miles, Its got all the add-ons I would want to do myself. But now im thinking that 42k is alot of miles, even though they are all highway and an oldman owned it and serviced it every 2,500 miles and I doubt he beat the engine, I geuss all he did was drive it down to florida in a trailer for the winter and would drive back and forth from southern florida up to the northern part for some reason I forget the story.
All my friends who know alot more about bikes than me said I made the right decision, that 42k is nothing. But im just wondering what you guys think

Well, it really doesn't matter now that you own it, does it?
Other than the cam chain tensioners, it should be fine if it was maintained.
Get out and ride it!!

Just got rid of a 1990 FXRS that had 65,000 miles, all original, ran better than my 2005 bagger

I'm sure it's got at least 3K in it before a rebuild, maybe 4 or 5K.

I have over 40k om my heritage. I run it pretty hard but always maintain it. It runs like a charm. Never had a problem and does not burn any oil.

I disagree with that post.
I'm about 200 clicks from 45k on my 2kflhr. Runs stronger than most. Chain tensioner shoes still look fine.

Buddy of mine just changed out his shoes on his Heritage at 70,000 miles. I've seen em bad at 10,000 miles. I think alot of it has to do with keeping clean oil in your bike. He changes his oil every 2000 miles. Thats one reason I don't use the synthetic stuff. Viscosity is still good on the synthetic stuff after 5000 miles but it gets dirty just like normal oil.

Ditto what everyone else has said. Were it my bike, I would inspect the tensioner shoes and replace if they're worn. Given that preventive maintenance, you should be good for many more miles.
FWIW, I went gear drive at 4500 miles and while my tensioners had a lot of life left in them, I doubt they'd have lasted anywhere near 45K the way they were looking - especially the inner one.

your friends are right. 42K is nothing. stay on top of the maintenance and it will serve well.
I have a friend with a '58 Panhead with 750K on the clock. That FLH has been in his family since 1964 and he's been riding it since 1975. Of course there are a lot of rebuilds in there, frame cracks been welded but it is still hanging on. Doubt that a Twin Cam could duplicate that but you never know til you try.
