brown or silver eagle on harley patch
What is the significance of the color of the eagle?

Never heard of any thing about the color of the eagle.
Now, if the wings are broken, that of course means the rider has been down.

I received a silver eagle patch as a gift, never been into all the patches but it looks nice so I wanted to sew it to my chaps. I've noticed that they sell all the patches with silver or brown eagles /wings. Even the H.O.G. patch is available with either silver or brown. Thought it my have to do with which bike you ride. Googled it to death for hours to no avail.

The eagle is identical on both the "classic" black background and the newer silver REFLECTIVE background . The reflective ones ( 450610 for the large 10" version or 450778 for the 53 ) cost twice the price of the black ones ( 450172 = 10" and 450173 = 5" ) The Chapters or dealers have freight charges according to weight.

If you go to the merchandise page for hog via the harley davidson website you will see there are three versions of the patch. Classic, classic with reflective background, and a silver eagle with silver lettering on a black background. That was the patch in question

I've heard a few times over the years that FXR had its own eagle patch... head kinda down and turned to one side, I think.

Let's try this again--
I can think of 2 reasons for your mockery...
1-- The idea of a patch specific to FXR.
2-- My description of the patch.
As much as I'd like #1 to be true, I never thought it very likely.
I kinda suspect #2 is what got you. I thought I might be remembering it wrong when I typed it. I'm now wondering if that is the basic HD eagle design. I've never paid attention to that. I don't do Harley T-shirts, patches, pins, etc.
Wipe the tears of laughter from your eyes and answer the question if you can. Let me in on the joke if you can't.
