We had our first local H.O.G. Chapter meeting of the year last night. The place was packed! Even had about a dozen bikes parked outside. We met the new 2009 board, the local dealership was well represented, and we even wore our new black vests, pins, badges, patches, and all. I guess there's hope for a couple of old sport bike riders yet. After the meeting, it was off for BBQ and beer!

We had a local H.O.G. get-together last nite.
The Ladies of Harley (LoH), the distaff side of our group, organized a nite out at a local bowling alley..
We had about 30 show up & we had a blast...
Most of the attendees probably NEVER bowled in league play & to be honest, it showed...
Threw three games & had pizza & wings & sodas & beers...
They gave out prizes for high games, low games, high series, low series & most gutter balls...
Hey, the temps are in the low 20s up here & even if Phil shows up tomorrow, we're still a month & a half from spring...
I don't wanna pickle...

We have "Hog Bowl" every February and we have a blast too. Not a whole hellava lot to do up here in the northern latitudes in the winter time, but we make the best of it! We pick a spot a 100 miles or so away, party like hell, spend the night and have a real good time! Then we have a "Chili Cook Off" in March and do the same thing.
We have a very active chapter that is a "Social Chapter" as well as a "Riding Chapter" We seem to have the best of both worlds. We've all heard the "horror stories" of a lot of chapters, and I'm happy as hell we have a good chapter!

The local chapter is not for me anymore. Too much in-fighting. Too many members want to do different things and start arguing about which idea is better. It didnt help that the old directors were not happy with giving up the throne. Control freaks.

Farwell, MI? You're right about nothing to do there. I have an old Navy buddy in Clare. Spent Thanksgiving '79 there.

Some of this sounds like there are weak HOG chapters out there. It is what you make it. My chapter is great and it doesn't matter if Willie g has my personal phone number or not - members are what makes it great. Yeah we have newbies and oldies alike. Hippies and guys that wear the infamous "Jane Fonda" patch. Every race, creed, sexual pursasion, etc. everyone gets along. Some wear $500 jackets - others wear generic t shirts. We don't talk politics, or question anyone's "legitimacy". We just ride. And everyone looks out for each other.

No. I remember when I started a chapter years ago I was given the ok to not let whiners join. We had a great bunch of people with 90% involvement. So for all you people that think HOG is not for you. You are absolutely right. Go back and hang out at the donut shop.
But if you are into meeting some of the greatest people I have ever met? Maybe go for some great rides. And make some life long memories and friends. Come on over, you are more than welcome.

Hi HDBikePerson,
I agree with most of what you have said, I am not a member of HOG, even though I ride a Harley, and probably wont ever join either, but I dont whine about HOG as such, and know quite a few members, who are really great people. I have been on a few HOG rides with friends, and to be quite honest, didnt really like them much, but that is probably more a specific local chapter issue than a universal issue with the whole organisation. I think for some people HOG is a great thing, and I would never ever advise anyone not to join just on my personal experiences with my local chapter. If HOG is for you, I say, more power to ya.

Well, you'll never catch me whinning about H.O.G.!!!
I still, for the life of me, can't figure out why anyone should care who anyone else rides with. If you're a big, bada$$ "REAL BIKER" aspiring to doing 10+ in the Federal Pen for methamphetamine trafficking and seeing how long you can skip bathing to impress your friends with your "hardcoreness," have fun. No need to disparage anyone else's choice to ride with a group that doesn't feel the need to impress anyone else with their outlaw-esque cred.
In other words, there's no need to whinn about it!
Disclaimer: Non-HOG member, non-1%er, non-biker guy who likes to ride & wrench on motorcycles.

In the end, it is the people ...
that make up an organization that sets the character of that org. I have read where it is what you put into it. True, but many an established organization has already set a character for that org. Try to change it and they get their hackles up. I walked into my first local meeting (6 years ago)and the first thing I noticed was not one officer or other member said Hi who are you or how are you. I made polite conversation with some, I tend to be an extrovert. At the meeting no "any new members here" inquiry followed by brief intro. As president of a 300 member club for eight years, this was a mistake we never made! Seem interested in your new members and make them feel welcome. They are the life blood of a club.
Part of the purpose of HOG is a public relations tool as well as a way to make people feel better about their purchase. Sort of that Saturn experience thing. Sure it gets folk together but if it did not do those other things the company would not be throwing money and resources at it. Make the customer feel like they belong to something more that just a purchase event. Not a bad thing for both owner and company. But the local chapters seem to drop the ball quite frequently as I have experienced and as others here have pointed out.
I belong to the national and that is fine for me. The fly and ride program in itself is enough justification for the small member fee. The state ride programs are a blast and we always meet some nice folks at those events. But our local here? Nah, I will pass on that.
