were drag pipes factory?

hey all, my 88 fxrs had drag pipes on it when I bought ,and ive noticed a lot other fxr,s are running drag pipes. did they come from factory like this? everything looks like a factory install. Also, is there an advantage to mufflers instead of straight pipes? don't really like the loud from these pipes.i don't want mufflers messing up the cool lines on these pipes if theres no performance gain.

even in the 50s they went from 2n1 pipe to a muffler , I think some of the early Harleys had open pipes

Guarantee they weren't referred to as "drag pipes".

Generally crushed to fishtail on end to quiet them!!
Chiwanese drag pipes do Not Improve performance, and generally hinder clean running at anything below WFO.
Just like 2 into ones do Not automatically translate into better performance...Very difficult indeed to Improve on the stock header pipe with free flowing Mufflers...Gonna cost Mucho...
I can think of 2 that really do work, and a decent Racing pipe can be built...but will also suffer at regular Street duty!!!

Drag Pipes are cheap enough to replace every few years as they look crappy...Hence the Popularity...that and everyone knows that Loud = Fast!!!!

I think you are looking at racers. The stock production models had mufflers.

bolts or I bolts in drag pipes work for tuning and most 2n1 need some tuning or modifying , I like supertrapps for that

Bandaid for crap that still don't work...Thunderheaders need No Tuning...Neither do stock headpipe staggered duals with free flowing Mufflers..If I use anything else...it is for basically stock bikes where a Cycle Shack system will suffice, or I build Proper pipes for the Dragstrip...custom 1-off for the engine being used, and No Other...
YMMV

No, I can only speak for the 1960's forward...
Drug pipes just drain power, except at WOT and near max rpm..
