reset odometer on 1992 fxrs/conv

I bought a used set of gauges off ebay for my 92 with right mount plate and uncut wires but my stock speedo has 10000 and something miles and ebay special has 30000 . stock speedo looks like hammered dog poo , bezel is dented bad with crack in glass . does anybody know if I can easily change mileage on odometer and if I remember correctly don't they make custom faces ? anybody install them

Agree. I'm pretty sure more than a few have been slightly disassembled and "Modified".

Take a photo of the original still on the scooter. The pack it up with the photo. If it ever comes up, you'll have the original with a photo of it on the scooter.

I could talk about drilling the back and rolling the numbers with a piece of coat hanger, but that would be against the law.

All that's well and good, and it is yours,,, however tampering with the odometer of any vehicle is a federal crime.. now, the odds are against you getting pinched for it,, but stranger things have happened... you can change the speedo legally, after reading the muddy rules and abiding by them...

so I can buy a drag specialty speedo for 49 bucks with zero miles , I can take my dyna to Harley and they will change new gauge on computer to read what old guage said and I know this one because I blew every light and gauge on dyna few years ago when regulator messed up was putting out 80 volts but I cant change odometer off gauge I bought off ebay , sounds about like our government

^^ Right...A Dealer can do whatever a Dealer can legally Do!
They can't alter VIN's anymore tho either..The MFG can do a VIN! Dealers also Cannot alter the odometer...Copy onto another or repair existing is OK...for a Dealer...
Like saying if the MFG can put a VIN on then so can I!!!!

Personally I would not Dream of believing an odometer on an older motorcycle...

The odometer only tells part of the story. There are so many other signs that will tell the age of the bike. If it has 10K on it for example, the wear on levers, splines, mounts, fork tubes etc., will tell. It is possible to fix many things but really there are almost always tell tale signs.

Connect it up to a drill and run it backwards for 20K miles.

I would be running that thing backwards for ever , I'm going to try to pull glass and bezel off old one and if I can get it off easy enough ill swap glass and bezel , if not ill just run 30000 mile gauge .

Speedometer

I have had some issues with an old smiths gauge here in OZ and took my stuffed gauge to an aircraft instrument guy. He put the insides of a working gauge into my housing. From memory also asked me how many miles it had done so he could recalibrate??

Didnt cost that much either.

I tried that too, except that I went to an auto speedometer repair shop. It didn't last even weeks but I found a NOS gage in the meantime. I didn't bother taking that one to him.

When the time comes, any buyer's just gonna have to believe me when I tell hin there's an extra 50,000 miles on the bike.
