No gas?

Put my tank back on ,connected all fuel lines and installed a clear view filter right before fuel inlet to carburetor.i opened my petcock and eveything flowed filling up fuel filter.shouldnt the bowl fill automatically as well? When i pull throttle i cant see or smell gas in carb throat.its a keihin butterfly carb.do i need to turn engine to prime the carb?

Pull the choke and crank the engine???

I've never run any filter, other than the screen on the petcock.

That would be the first thing to check. Along with pulling the bowl to verify gas is getting there. Should be able to see the pump squirting gas into the carb from the front.

What they said. I would advise losing the filter. Many times they cause fuel starvation at higher rpm.. it is a restriction in a gravity feed system. Fuel starvation causes very hot chamber temperatures (lean). Good luck

I put a rebuild kit in it so its all fresh inside. Set the float according to manual . I did however change the acc pump housing to the harley upgraded housing with check ball where you drill out the dimpled area .i did put an o ring there to seal it up.havent cracked fuel bowl yet .wanted to check here first to see if vacuum pulled the gas through.im reluctant to keep cranking it over as new cam and rings are in place.common wisdom tells me gas should be there via gravity, bowl should be full and gas should squirt when i pull throttle.

Not directly to address your problem but get rid of the inline filter. They are nothing but problems. The placement between the cylinders absorbs heat and can/will create vapor lock. There is no reason to have it there.

Have the fuel lines been replaced? Seen more than a few that swell up over time and significantly restrict the fuel flow.

As a work around for the immediate issue, spray some fuel directly in the carb and see if it starts. Sometimes that initial start just need a little help. But your accel pump should be pumping if there is fuel in the bowl. When you rebuilt the carb did you check all the passages and clean the passages behind the jets?

Fuel lines are new as well.when i say bowl hasnt been opened ,i mean since the rebuild.i hate to open up parts after sealing unless i have to.this may be one of those times.i wanted to ask here first before doing unecessary work.i havent even turned bike over yet except to hear if my starter worked.all i know so far is that i have gas in the tank, gas in my filter at the carb but no gas when i pull the throttle.dont want to crank it yet until i know for sure gas is in the bowl.i only put enough gas in the tank to get started. Had to use reserve for it to come out.with my new cam and rings in place last thing i want is a lot of cranking only to find out theres no gas in the bowl.next step is to pull the bowl.

no bowl drain.... pulled bowl theres gas in them thar hills. wth? I pull throttle and can clearly see pump rod moving but no gas. I wonder if the new accelerator pump housing is wrong.its like the andrews upgrade housing but Harley brand. anybody familiar with this?

With the air filter off look down the throat and just keep working the throttle until you see gas squirt... it could take 15-20 cranks to get fuel moving.
If no fuel after this, either the pump passage/nozzle is clogged or your modification is bypassing moving fuel through the nozzle and shooting it back to the bowl,,, I've seen this happen when the inlet check ball doesn't drop back and seal the port when the pump is actuated..
I have also had to pull the nozzle from the bowl and manually clean it's passage as well as the passage from the pump housing to the nozzle...

I'm suspecting the pump housing shooting fuel back into bowl.its the only thing that makes sense .carb was thoroughly cleaned and all ports flushed. may have to seal the hole I drilled and put original housing back on to figure it out.

Fact!!! No fuel pump and gravity isn't enough for the fuel to adequalely flow at higher engine speeds. My bike had an inline on it when I bought it and if the tank was less than 3/4 full, it would completely empty the carb at higher RPMs. Screen inside the tank and one piece fuel line is the best set up.
