oil vent filter?

On my fxr the line normally attached to the air cleaner housing is routed down to behind trans and is open to atmosphere like an old chevy road tube.it is spitting oil all over the bottom of the bike not a lot but there is some there. can I re route it up an put a filter on it? or do I have to go to a catch can type deal
