Pulling the engine
I'm clear on all the stuff that needs to happen to get the engine out, but not clear on how you physically get a hold on it and get it up and out of the frame? How much does just the motor weigh? is it safe to lift using slings around the barrels?
Main reason for pulling is I was under it a while back and found out the PO used hardware store Grade 5 bolts for the case thru-bolts. I'm going to do some work on the cam, lifters, and heads this winter and figured it's a good time to yank the whole thing.
PS - FXR-specific question mods, DON'T move!!

it weighs around 160 lbs......I usually just grab it by the cylinders in kind of a bear hug and horse it out.....if you've got a lift to put the bike on it'll make it easier.

How do they do it at the stealer? I'm imagining some kind of forklift kind of thing that grabs in front of the front cylinder and behind the rear?

The only 2 ways I know of is to do what Wilks has already said, bear hug the btch & haul it out .... or lay it on its side unbolt it & lift the frame off the engine.
Choice is really yours.

I used to do that with iron head sportster engines years ago, think I would drop a nut if I did that now days.

My thoughts exactly!
Here's the ticket. Unfortunately I have neither the One-Hander nor that kind of lift for the bike.

I do have an engine hoist, may make an L-shaped piece to do the same thing from above.

Had to make due with what is in the shop.
I used a lift and a strap. Didn't take any photos.

+1 on the bear hug. Get a buddy to help guide it out when you're pulling the motor out.

I did the bear hug putting a Triumph engine in last year, and it was a pretty unsatisfactory experience. It weighs near as much because the trans is integral. I think I'll make something for the engine hoist. Thanks for the comments.

I am not as big as most but can still hug the Btch when needed & I am sure Drifter you can do the same. Trick is grab it with respect & hug it like its your lifeline.

What you'r talking about is why a lot of old timers used to pull the heads and cylanders in the frame and just lift out the lower end. In the wind.
