FXR Speedo Broken
Is there any reason an 86 speedo won't work on an 85? They do have different part numbers...

As long as the mount type is the same, it should be no issue to swap them. AFAIK the difference is the 85mph requirement.

It seems to have th same mount requirements. Just poking around on ebay and all of them are do say "for 86-94," or 84-85.
What is this 85mph speed requirement all about?
Nothing to do with different gear ratio so it will be off?

Back in like 79 the feds mandated that speedo's show 85 mph as the maximum reading, along with being more accurate and having 55 being the prominent feature of the scale. The law was repealed, then applied as a rule, and un-applied and re-applied and so on. It caused much confusion as it was mentioned in many tampering regulations. What it did was cause many manufactures to follow the original law, just in case. Not to mention change over production lines. So lots of early to mid 80's speedo's showed 85 as a maximum speed along with 55 being highlighted. As this was also the low point of American performance and also the era of 89 octane only fuel, 85mph was not easily obtained by many of the cars being built, so, few complained.
Today, it's only an issue on an accurate restoration.

Wow you learn something new everyday. Thank you.
Both speedos say 120 though. Just don't want to buy one and have it not work on my 85.

This is true. Just need to see why my speedo isn't working.

I have my Dyna ICM coming in the mail soon. What rpm should I set the rev limiter to?

I don't think I would want mine to go any higher than 6200 if everything in the motor is fairly stock.
