1988 Fxrs turn signals
They work as long as you hold the switch in. Is that the way there made or do i have a problem? Are there stock switches that lock on?

If you can find them, you could replace them with switches off the '86 models. Those switches stayed on until you turned them off.

Anyone using aftermarket signal modules? Good or bad?Do any of the aftermarket signal modules stay on longer than nine or ten seconds?

I had to replace the speedo on my '93 FXRT with an aftermarket one.
I don't remember why, now, but that turned my turn signals into '86 style, like Ed Y mentioned.
I like it because I have positive control. There's no more guesswork, no more off too soon or on too long. I turn 'em on and they stay on 'til I turn 'em off.

It isn't the switches, it's the turn signal module, a $180 electronic module under the left side cover. It uses pulses from a transmitter on the speedo cable to tell it to cancel when you've gone a tenth of a mile.

I went thru two H-D modules (2nd one a used one) then went with the Badlands Auto Shutoff module. Very reliable but it shuts off the turn signals after 11 seconds whether you've moved an inch or a mile. Considering the price difference, well worth it. http://www.badlandsmotorcycleproduct...CSM.htm#ATSIII
The MoCo holds the patent on the 1/10th of a mile feature, so no one will be making a similar one for another 5 years or so.

My '87 was the same. (push & hold) I replaced them with push on/push off switches from HD. Don't know if they are still in production. No module involved.

Sorry, you're wrong, it was the switches. There were no electronic turn signal modules back then. Only a flasher. Electronic turn signal modules didn't appear until some time in the early 90's (if I remember correctly).

As Ed Y said, it is the switches that provide that function. They are push-on, push-off switches. The parts book for my '86 lists them as:
Right: 71572-86a
Left: 71570-86a

Pretty sure it was but 87 models might have had them too. I got a good friend that still has a 86 FXSTC with the original turn signal buttons on it. They also still work.
I had a '88 FXSTS for 10 years. Also the hold down type. Actually I prefer them to the modern day approach.

Speaking of turn signal buttons...
I had a '98 Sportster that was an export model. One of the differences (I was told) was that the turn signal buttons were rounded, not concave like my '91 FXRS. I've seen that many non-export later models have the rounded buttons, and I'd really like to put them on my bike. Are they a direct swap out?
I can't see how the '86 buttons would work (push on, push off) without a relay for each side to maintain power to the circuit.

Have you never seen a flashlight with a button on it?? Push to turn on, push to turn off.

Ed, I've never seen H-D turn signal buttons that weren't momentary contacts.
