only firing on one cylinder? 1988 FXRP

i think it might be the ignition... i checked spark plugs and coil cables. the front cylinder is not firing. maybe the coil. is there a way to test that?
because only one side seems to be working is that possible?

Yes, it is possible. I rode mine 5 miles to home on only one cylinder. It was the coil wire. I pulled the chrome coil cover off and found that one of the wires (don't remember which cylinder) was broken. Easy fix. Hope that works for you too.

Ok did you have to run a new wire? Or what... Did you test for a short or just saw that it broke

Sorry late getting back to you.

I was lucky. I made it home, went to looking. I figured it had to be somewhere in the electrical system so after ck/ng the battery, I pulled the coil cover. I didn't see it first. Everything looked great so I pulled the coil to check if that was it, and when I removed the coil wires, the bolt connection on the end of one of the wires came off. I replaced that connector, hooked it up, and she fired right up. Hope it is as easy a fix for you as for me.

Had that too.... Never managed to track if down so went and bought an Ultima Single Fire system. Perfect! And I can now program my ignition as well - made up an adaptor cable for the laptop.

If it has the stock ignition system still intact?
look under the frame just behind the tranny, make sure the connector is tight and clean.
