Ongoing FXRT COMPLETE REBUILD

PROJECT: 1984 FXRT WITH A S&S SUPER SIDEWINDER 107ci, 6 GALLON TANK, LEATHER BAGS AND TOUR PAK

BEFORE: www.wildwestcycle.com/br_fxrtphotogallery.html

AFTER: WIP pics are coming. I have so many. i need to take a few new ones too.

The rebuild of Pilgim's old Big Red (Now My Big Red)is ongoing.
1) Remove and replace rear pivot axle in swing arm. It was SHATERD inside and jammed. We had to CUT the old swing arm off to remove it. BIG job. We replaced everything with a combination of 2 aftermarket kits. The Sta Bo kit and the spherical bearings from the CCE kit. Looks like it will work great. NEW STOCK TYPE SWING ARM. Nuttin fancy.

2) Complete rewire under fairing. Conversion of manual oil gauge to electronic sending unit.

3) Repaint entire bike House of Kolor Candy Apple Red with real gold leaf accents. Frame will stay black. MAYBE powder coated in the future... MAybe....If i really want to do this job properly I will strip the frame and have it 100% powder coated. Paint on a frame sucks. Powder coat is the way to go.

4) New rear sleek turn signal tree.

5) New AIR seals for air forks

6) All new hand control switch housings and switches. Black housings and chrome switches for a change. looks nice.

7) New seat. Actually my old custom made Saddleman gel seat, Explorer model from my old 1983 FXRT. Perfect condition

8) New longer 13 inch shocks. The old shocks were so short it changed the entire rake of the front end. Proper 13 inch shocks brings the effective rake back to the true 30-31 degrees. New shocks are very very hi end WP. Adjustable for rebound, compression and pre load. Remote reservoir, nitrogen charged.

9) Replaced front wheel with another stock front wheel. The old one was quite a bit out wobble/bent, AND had a high spot too. Getting the new used wheel powder coated in solid gloss black as I write this. New Avon Venom front tire 100x 19

10) New windshield. The old one is not too bad but I had a new one on hand. Fabricate new windshield gasket.

11) Hooked up original electric S&S compression releases. There was adequate wire where they had been cut previously. 107 inch side winder. They now engage automatically when starter is pressed.

12) Extensive work and reinforcement was necessary to WIDEN the new FORWARD mounted foot controls 3 inch extended too. We had to go real wide on the controls because the gas tank had been widened by a LOT to make it 6 gallons. I liked the tank so we worked around the ergonomics. The sheer greater new width forces my legs way out now. However, the issue has been addressed. Result is super comfortable seating arrangement for me who is 6' 4": tall. Pilgrim had it set up for someone very much less tall. The FXRT actually lends itself best to taller riders. One of the very very few bikes that Harley ever made that did this. This is one of the very few bikes i do NOT feel cramped on. No one less than 6 feet tall could probably ride THIS SET UP properly. The pegs are WAY forward now which feels fantastic, finally!
,
13) Installed new handle bars. They are wider and have a little more pull back. Perfect for my ergos. From some Harley bagger

14) new Foam Grips. My favorite.

15) Arlen Ness new side covers. My painter has graced them with House of Kolor Candy Apple Red. Awesome! The rest of the bike was extremely variable as far as shade. A lot of it was too orange. My painter does candy like no on else. This is gonna hurt too (financially). But, what are you gonna do? I reckon do it up right!

16) We had to trim the LOWERS for the FXRT fairing since the ergos are different with the forward mount foot controls. We took as little off as was necessary. I love the lowers... Extremely rare.

17) 100% refit of all leather saddlebags and leather tour pak. They were in terrible shape. They refurbished to BRAND NEW condition after I had two experts work on them. Re dyed and conditioned. They look fantastic. Good for another 250k miles!

18) New rear wheel. We got rid of enclosed chain and went to Tsubaki o ring chain and a wider 150 series rear Avon Venom. NICE rubber! Sexy tread pattern and very grippy. Wheelies are > burnouts!

19) New INNER primary. This was a custom piece off my 83 FXRT. The flanges for the enclosed chain were cut off and the height carefully decked to match the outer primary. Expertly chromed. It looks incredible

20) New OUTER primary. The old one was just too rough. I had the brand new one chromed. The look with the fully chromed inner primary is something! New derby cover too.

21) new front motor mount, a Heavy duty Velva Touch V Thunder poly mount. The old mount was completely collapsed and destroyed! The front of the motor dropped over an inch. Not any more.

22) New V thunder adjustable stabilizers

23) New R&R Billet top motor mount and coil bracket for the new Dyna coils. i had these pieces RED ANODIZED. look great!

24) We eliminated the compensating sprocket and put an old but never used Fisher dampener in its place

25) I had an old but never used fully polished Spyke starter that i decided to install. The old starter was OK, but I decided to rebuild it since it had a hard life history of turning over the 107 when the compression releases were never hooked up

26) Align and shim front rotors. This brake system looks like it will stop very well. Oversized by Pilgrim. We decided to retain the skinny 35mm forks for now since we got the air system to seal again. As long as there is a fork brace it is not as bad as some people think. It does LOOK undersized. But for now it stays.

27) Complete refurbished 5 speed transmission: Polished cases, Andrews back cut gears assembled by Zippers. Bisagno Brothers double row trap door. I had this in storage since 1998. Never used since it was built.

28) Monstrous custom HUGE brick of a motor plate between motor and tranny. Again, I had this for years just waiting...

29) Arlen Ness transmission top cover. very sleek

30) Conversion to 1988 and up clutch cable housing. This clears the Carlini fine.

31) Special rare Carlini Torque arm for 4 inch bore motors in FXR chassis.

32) a LOT OF REROUTING and of various systems as per my mechanic.

There have been MANY other things done. I cant remember every detail. We are waiting on the paint and gold leaf job right now.

33) KEEPING all the extra gauges that Pilgrim added. Each and everyone of them is quite nice to have. I like to see what the mill is doing

After this is all assembled and run for a few weeks, the bike will come back to the shop to install these parts waiting for it.

1) Special Stage 6 kit from R&R cycle. Hyperpak..
2) New CNC diamond cut billet heads set up for 6800RPM (for the 107 ci) These will make you weak in the knees just looking at them!
3) Special R&R cam for the S&S super Sidewinder 107
4) New piston rings
5) Billet push rod covers red anodised
6) New Daytona Twin Tec ignition
7) Jims semi solid lifters. they turn in to a solid after a certain RPM
8) PSI clear Anodised carb. Big bucks!
9) Force winder style side intake with K&N filter. This intake is HUGE. Not tiny like most you see.
10) RB Racing LSR 2:1 pipes. Chromed with ceramic inner coating to protect against bluing
11) RB Racing air fuel meter and sensor

Bagger Wheelies anyone?

You can say that again. Guys ask me why i just did not buy a brand new bike like the road glide. "Labor of love. Labor of Love".

The Road Glide is a great looking bike but way too heavy and not 'sporty" enough. When I get done with the FXRT it will run circles around some Pro Streets power wise and handling too.

I can bring the weight in at about 660 lbs I hope on the BEST chassis Harley ever made for a Big Twin. FXR (RULES!) PLENTY of GROUND CLEARANCE and a 30 degree rake. I am a curb jumpin sort of guy! I can wheel a well set up FXRT around like a dirt bike. Ha ha. Not quite. But better than a Road Glide for sure!

R&R should help me put down some extremely respectable HP and Torque. Those world class diamond cut heads are ported so well it looks like art! My mechanic is convinced he can dial in the 4th generation PSI carb to bring home some REAL bacon.

You CAN"T BUY what we are rebuilding for any kind of money either. The bike has soul and history. I think a quarter million miles is what Pilgrim said. It will look better than factory fresh in a while. Good for another quarter million miles!

PILGRIM DONT LET YOUR WEBSITE LAPSE! I think we should keep it going. i can help out. I will have plenty photos and narration to get posted up.

MY rebuild of this FXRT: not so radically changed where the focus of the original design is lost. SPORT TOURING in its very best sense.

In spite of a myriad of wear and tear, Big Red, as presented when i received it.... is a platform way ahead of its time. Ken addressed the major shortcomings of the bike:
1) Not enough power. He dropped in a 107...(I just took it a bit further)
2) Terrible fuel capacity and weird looking teeny tiny gas tank. Now a whopping 6 gallons with a FUEL GAUGE TOO! The job of widening is FLAWLESS except for the defective tank sealer which is peeling. I am having it "boiled" and redone with Red Kote. New paint in Candy apple with GOLD LEAF will be the bomb!

3) Not enough gauges. I like feed back on my mill. I am not a minimalist at all. Ken even has a VOES indicator. I like ALL the extra gauges he added. Except the oil filled manual oil gauge. That is being changed to an electric sending unit. Also am adding an AIR FUEL GAUGE by RB RACING.
4) Less plastic. The quality of the leather bags he fitted is lifetime use!

PLUS!!!: I had SO MANY parts...expensive custom parts that dropped right in to this project!! An entire custom Zippers/Andrews back cut tranny, a full polished 2KW Spyke starter motor! and more!
I cant wait to show off the INNER CHROMED primary. It mates with the outer like a show piece. Man, it looks good.

And I must say Fartknokker, that Black Betty is one of the very BEST looking FXR's I have ever seen. What a BIKE! You understand!

More Photos. I will have more as soon as my new camera comes in the mail. The new photos will show some ASSEMBLED components instead of just chaos.

Photos key:

1) Extended forward (3 inches) and OUT (6 inches) foot controls. Diamond plate is NOT a foot rest. It covers two welded bars that reinforce the increase in width. Safety issue. Pegs can withstand 300 to 400lbs of force.Custom welded SS shifting link.

2)Area where swing arm was CUT off of bike and tranny removed. Shattered swing arm pivot shaft removed. New CCE and Stabo kits installed (combined)

3) This is a special brake extension since my pegs are now so far distant. i am a right leg below the knee amputee and this helps my braking too. The center of this will be machined out and then the piece chromed. Works well.

4) Bisago Brothers double row bearing trap door. Robust! Note the nice looking Ness tranny cover. I only like Corey Ness's things. His lines are classier IMO. Full polished tranny case is from 1983 5 speed shovel. Case is clear coated with 2 part clear ceramic that is good for many years. They sat in storage for 10 years with out tarnishing even a little. The clear ceramic wipes on like water with a paper towel.

5) 13 INCH WP Shocks. 3 way adjustable. Good stuff. Needs to be high polished. Rear fender and all tins are out now for paint

More Photos

Photo key:

1) Wiring birds nest. Getting cleaned up. Behind fairing too. This was never good even from the factory. My guy fortunately is very good and practical with electrics. Note alarm system. An old one but good one. Thunder Page.

2) Front motor mount destroyed and collapsed. Replaced with V Thunder poly mount. Even those can break down.
Also replaced adjusting links with Heavy duty V Thunder links.

3) Very nice to use S&S automatic electrical compression releases. Sweet.

4) My old inner primary from 1983 that i had chromed in 1997. I saved it all these years. Wait until you see pix of it mated with the outer primary. Man, it looks great. Internals here are stuffed with Fisher dampener, Tsubaki primary chain, a hard to find Rhino IDLER GEAR instead of a nylon shoe to take up chain slack. Rivera Pro Clutch

5) This whole area was pretty nasty from grease and road grime. Hard to clean unless the bike is stripped down. So we went to town. We did extensive cleaning on top of what you see. Transmission and swing arm are back in the bike.

More pics of assembled bike coming. No tins yet. They are in paint.
