Did you recently work on the bike?
Check both front and rear brake switches first to see if they are engaged.

Is there more play in the front brake lever than usual?
If the brake lever is loose it may not be firm enough to hold the switch in and the brake light will be on constantly without the brake being applied. Check the master cylinder for water or air in the system or a corroded plunger in the master cylinder. Bleed or replace fluid as necessary to firm up the lever for the front brake.

Otherwise check wiring from the switches back for shorts, pinched wiring, etc.

Thanks, I will go thru I just got the bike the brakes work great not sloppy seem nice and tight I was wondering if the forward control could be too tight there's no play at all in the peddle I wasn't sure if you could back off the rod that goes into the master cylinder or not.

90% of the time that problem is in the front brake light switch. Take apart the left switch housing and look at it, it might be broken, or mis adjusted. Sometimes you have to bend the steel actuator on the pushrod to make 'em work.

I agree with your other replies, just to expand a bit... Had same problem as you. My "new for me" 84 FXR frt brake lever would SLOWLY return, brake light stayed on until the master plunger "lever" would depress the switch. (Recent colder riding here in WI magnified the problem.) If your lever isn't immediately coming all the way back when you release the brake, it's time to remove & clean or rebuild the master. The plunger bore in mine was contaminated with mung from years of old brake fluid & moisture, the plunger was sticking (typical on older bikes when the fluid wasn't serviced regularly). FYI I stretched the plunger spring 10mm for more release pressure on the plunger. Wet parts with fresh fluid then thoroughly bleed the system with HD recommended DOT 5 silicone brake fluid until nothing but fresh fluid comes out of the caliper. (A Mity-Vac brake bleeder makes bleeding the master and the rest of the system much faster. Tough to get the air out of the master without one, but not impossible.) If the plunger cap and/or piston o-ring is cracked or torn, etc buy a rebuild kit. HD discontinued the kit but you can buy an aftermarket online for around $16 plus shipping. From past experience, I've usually been able to clean & reuse the plunger and other parts if no damage is found, but you might want to get a kit beforehand just in case. Happy riding!

If its been doing this since you've owned the bike check the tailight globe.
It should only go in one way but you'd be surprized what previous owners can do with a bit of force.
