Fairly involved. Depending on what kind of controls you have now, you'll need all the pegs, linkages, peg mounts, brake master cylinder, then there's the whole primary cover issue.

Maybe you can find someone who wants to switch to forwards & just swap everything... Otherwise, I'd contact Elvis (www.elvisplace.com) and see what he's got & what it would take you to get converted. He's pretty much the man when it comes to FXR stuff. He tried to talk me into switching to mids from my forward controls, to enhance canyon carving ability.

Good luck, man!

I did it, once you have the parts it's easy.
The difference it makes to your handling is well worth the effort.
You can shift your weight from side to side using your legs making riding through the twisties a hell of a lot of fun.
DO IT!

Before

After

i just switched to forward controls from mids and think going backwards would be quick and easy since i still have the parts sitting here. If your rod through the primary is gone its going to be more involved.

If you think you can pull the inner primary then the rest is a breeze. It's funny to see how many people are going back to mids. In the 1990's everyone was going to foward controls (great for softail-sucks for FXR).

All a matter of personal comfort, man. I've had 2 Sportsters with mids, and they could carve pretty well. Now, with a bum knee in my old age, I'm happier to stretch my legs a bit & relax. Mids make my knee stiffen up after a while. I know you can have mids & highway pegs, but the forwards do me just fine.

Flat low bars & mids to carve the corners, forwards & pullback bars to relax the back & legs.

Vanilla vs chocolate to me.

I would like to rig up a system of having both mids and forwards, necause I would NEVER use hi-way pegs, they are as dangerous as hell! I have seen too many giuys come down with them, because in a sudden situation there is just no way humanly possible to get your foot to that brake quick enough, which usually means the front brake gets hit with everything, which as we all know usually results in the front going down if you are in a corner. My belief is that they should be illegal.

Yeah, I've had that setup before, and wasn't a huge fan. Like the forwards alot better, personally. If I was setting up a canyon carver, I'd definitely do mids. Don't see that happening, tho.

What kind of forwards do you have?

If the m/c is mounted on them it gets to be some time and money, most FXR forwars use the original m/c, in that case it is a simple job.

Was the original shifter shaft removed?

All the stock parts are readaly available if you don't have them.

Hi Hardluk1,
I would love to see the pics, as that is what I would like to do to my FXR, I have forward controls, but with the m/c in the original position with an extended rod to the forward controls, so should be a bit easier. The only problem I have is that I dont have the original shifter shaft through the primary, that was all blocked off years ago, but I cant see any reason why I couldnt work around that little problem somehow, just need to put the thinking cap on. If it is easier to email them too me, I can send you my email address through the private message function if you like.
