hard starting and back firing

I bought this bike it's been setting around about a year.1991 fxr. when I try to start it after it sits over night it will fire up, then quit. It will do this several times before it starts. When it starts it will back fire through the tailpipe mostly but it will back fire through carberator also. (ss) shorty. when you ride it it backs fires hesitates and so on until it gets hot. Then it runs good and every once in awhile you'll get a hesitation and pop through carb. I thought of carb at first but it seems more electrical to me. I'm not much on electronic ignition. Any advice would be apriciated.

thank you,

Bill1

I think it's fuel. Did you change the fuel in the tank? Check the filter? You may need to tear apart the carb and clean up the jets, etc. May have an intake leak. Sounds like it's running lean...

My 2 cents...

could be a number of things.... how do your lifters sound?/ one could be worn or load is not correct? Load= finger tight pushrods plus a few turns pending on manufacturer and manual specs.
Back fire could be also from intake or exhaust leak...
exhaust= you can hear it seep from revving and listen.
carb= hotshot or starter fluid at the base of the manifold and head careful not to get false negative from overspray into intake rather concentrate at gasket seat of manifold collar.
Electrical either works or does not usually... intermittent is a sensor however I think the smog is not there with an S&S carb.
Otherwise I would mention the rev limiter/module under the seat had a recall not sure your model but year for that connector. I believe. Double check either online somewhere or at the Dealer on that.... It is a black box about the size of a deck of cards under the seat, IF you even got it. but really sounds like a lifter for some reason.
