Not-So-Good Vibrations

All,

I was wondering what the life expectancy was on the FXR motor mounts? Specifically the rubber.

I don't know what everyone else experiences, but I get a helluva lot of vibration at highway speeds, and if I ride for an hour or two, I have to take a break & let the pins & needles get out of my feet & hands.

Could this just be an adjustment issue, or am I looking at replacing the expensive-@$$ motor mounts? Just curious...

Been wondering the same thing lately myself.

My motor seems to shake around a lot more than it used to, and I;m starting to notice a lot more vibes too.

Stuck my head down around the front mount the other day and noticed the rubber seems to be pretty cracked and degraded looking.

Think It's getting replaced over this winter.

The front motor mount is fairly bulletproof if it hasn't been oil contaminated, '92-'94. The two stabilizers (front and top) will with time wear out.

The nylon shims on each side of the swingarm will wear also.
Have been changing them, and the stabilizers at the same time.

The gel blocks pressed into each side of the swingarm are also bulletproof unless any leakage occurs.

There are replacement upgrades for the gel blocks if they are leaking. The rubbers under the stock risers should be looked at also.

lucille is right.
in my experience, never seen rubbermounts worn out, except with dynas. stabilizers wear out & cause headaches. literally. mine were shot at 20k or so. rubbers were still good. unless you have a high mileage shaker, maybe then the rubbers need a closer look.

Thanks for the replies, all. I just recently replaced the rubbers under the risers when changing bars, so that ain't it. I'll take a look at the stabilizers next.

Beach Boys song......Good Vibrations?

Hi Danny,
Think that you will find the top stabilizer worn, it is the one that wears the fastest on my bike, I always change both at once.

Didn't notice if you said you were getting the vibes in the corners. The nylon shims on each side of the swingarm if worn, will set up a vibe and a sloppy feel in a corner and fade away as your bike straightens out.

Sometimes hard to nail down where the vibes are coming from, and they start so gradually, you wonder if it's your imagination.

Worn tires, out of balance, etc. add to the mix.....keep looking and you will find it.

Had a vibe noise coming from the front of my bike for a couple of years...drove me crazy, found a rivet in the front fender that would only vibrate sometimes.......
