It just makes me wanna go fast!

My FXR was my first bike and then about 5 years later I picked up a softail custom. Well, wifey liked the ride much better on the softail, plus I put bags on that bike so it became my daily rider. Fast forward to us having a little girl who is now 9 months old and wifey isn't on the back anymore for a while. I take the FXR out much more now and have noticed....I...CAN'T...DRIVE...55!!!!!!!! Seriously though, while I was content just cruising with the softail doing freeway speeds around 70; when I am on the FXR...screw 70...80 to 85 just wants to happen. Plus I just love an opportunity to pass so I can throttle up to 90 easy as can be. I better cool it or a ticket is coming soon.

I completely understand. I'm over 85mph most of the time. The rest I'm over 100!!!

Individual people are affected differently, the only bikes I've ridden that have tempted me to speed up have been the Japanese four cylinders...they're just begging for RPM. With any of my Hogs I'm content just to cruise at or below the speed limit.

Yes I know the feeling, I have put a new cam in my FXR (EV27) and it just wants to GO!! Maybe you wanna get youself a job like mine, it teaches you to slow down very quickly! I have a very good job which I love immensely, I actually love getting up each morning and going to work!! Strange I know, but its true!! The problem is, the job is dependent on me having a license. Company policy is lose your license once, your employment is suspended, but held for you for up to a 3 months suspension once and once only (not to mention the fact that you spend 3 months without an income). Lose it for more than 3 months(which is the usual suspension period here, for minor offences like running out of points etc, but for serious offenses like doing more than 45kmh over the limit, DUI or culpable driving etc, the suspension can be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years), or if you lose it for a second time whilst employed with the company, it doesnt matter how long you have been with the company or how high up the ladder you are, even if you are the Boss's Son or something, thats it, job gone, no questions asked, no exceptions, dont let the door hit you on the way out! So since working there I have learned to ride pretty close to the posted speed limit, which frustrates the hell out of my friends sometimes, but I just say, F**K 'EM, its not their job on the line! I will ride to look after my job!
Surprisingly, its not that bad once you get used to it, and I actually get where I am going more relaxed these days from not having to look over my shoulder for that unmarked cop car all the time.

I am a Hearse Driver most of the time, but do my fair share of any general jobs around the parlour, and yes that includes doing my time on the van roster picking up the bodies from Hospitals/Nursing Homes/ Coroners Morgue/private residences or whatever, And it is the best job I have ever had, no joke!! I have never had a job before where I actually look forward to going to work. That is why I have slowed down. Besides, in the 3 years I have worked there, I have picked up somewhere between 1 and 2 dozen bikers who couldnt keep their hand off that throttle and thought they were a better rider than they actually were and wrapped themselves around a tree or pole or guard rail or something, so that has an affect on my speed as well, as I see the consequences all the time.

Grip it and rip it! When your time comes it comes...I know many guys who were doing all the right things and obeying all posted speed limits, only to be taken out by a car or truck who wasn't payin' attention.
You can go from car crashes (alot more go this way than on motorcycles), illness, accidents, disease, riding your bicycle, and walking across the street. When my time comes, I hope it is on my bike and not wasting away in an old folks home...

Yes to a certain degree, I would agree with you there, when I was single and had no kids, I had the same attitude, and when the kids have all flown the coop, I may have that attitude again, but while my family relies on me as the principal breadwinner, I take that responsibility very seriously, and will do everything in my power to make sure my wife doesnt end up as a widowed single mother. I have met too many of them, and every one of them has been doing it pretty tough, and it aint a situation I wanna put my wife or my kids in. I aint stupid though, I realise I could get killed tomorrow just standing there doing nothing, and life is full of risks, and I take them all the time like everyone else, but at the same time, I aint gonna take foolish unnecessary risks, and go asking for trouble.

Thanks sctilt, that little girl lights up a room by just being in it, she's very, very special. And that pretty little old lady hugging her has been my wife for over 35 years.
