Aftermarket parts...

I have an 89 FXLR and I'm having trouble finding aftermarket parts for this bike. It the catalogs everything lists older models or 91 and newer...not a whole lot for the 89. Is it possible to look up parts using a different model or year? I'm sure there are a lot of common parts with these bikes. Just not sure what model to use for the look up. Thanks for the help guys, its greatly appreciated!

Maybe I didn't make my post clear. I know where to look for the parts. Just wondered if I could look up an alternate model. Seems the 1989 model year does not have a lot of aftermarket support. The books all list 1991 and newer or 1984 and older. Can I look up say a Dyna instead of an FXR to get a broader selection of parts?

A lot of the parts up to 94 will fit your bike, in 95 they changed over to the Dyna with a different motor so those won't fit.

Dyna's a different frame, so no model specific parts, regardless of year, will fit.

In general terms, I don't think there were any major changes in the FXR except for the fork diameter change. My bike's a 93 FXLR converted to an FXRT with all the tins and plastics from an 84 FXRT.

The rear fender struts had to be swapped to position the shocks at the correct angle for the saddlebags. The plastic glove boxes in the old style fairing had to be notched to allow full stop-to-stop steering with the newer thicker forks. That was it, as best as I recall.

I ride an FXR but am not even close to being an expert, so take this accordingly. Hope it helps a little though.

Bingo! You guys just hooked me up with the info I was really looking for. I figured there must be similar bikes out there just was not sure what the general area was I needed to be looking in. I'm glad to find that the FXR's didn't really change at all through the whole production run. That just makes it easier to look things up as well as look for another bike. I'm hooked on the FXR and am already looking into a newer one and giving the 89 to the girlfriend. Shes been around 8 years so I guess this makes up for not getting her a ring.
