My dip stick in the oil tank wants to launch to the moon

I am stumped on this problem. The bike started up fine after new rings and freshening up the top end, in addition to this work, I had the nose cone rechromed. Now I am gettig a lot of pressure in the oil tank. I have rechecked the timeing in the cam area and all is well there. Anybody got any suggestions on this problem?

pcv valve? clogged maybe your tappet screen clogged. that is a little nut or standard head on the oil pump if you did not know. sounds like you do not have smog on it anymore, did you create positive crankcase vent??? as your old rings and less compression may have not been an issue till you tightend and bumped it up.

This is a 1988 fxr so there is no smog crap on it, I am getting the pressure building up and from what I understand it should vent out into the carb, ya its still conected, and not build pressure in the tank. And I have checked the tappet screen.

Did you use the correct nosecone gasket? If you used the later one, your oiling and possibly venting can get screwed up.

You said you had the cam cover re-chromed, is it the same cover, or did they give you one for a later model? ( I have always refused to call them nose cones, since they go on the side...).

I rechromed the stock cover and the replacement gasket was the same as the old one. This thing has me baffled to no end.

Have you done a leak down test?

My thoughts too, maybe rings did'nt set, I'm dealing with that same "blow by" problem on a twin cam stroker motor.

What about them umbrella thingies in your rocker covers? Did you get them back in the correct location?

had the same issue with my 1993 sporty. oil blowing out the vent, cap popping off etc. I pulled the top end apart and found both compression rings cracked. Since you didn't have the problem before, then you changed rings, I would assume they might be problem. If all you did was pull the cam cover off, and left everything in the chest then vent timing wouldn't have changed. An 88 doesn't have umbrella valves in the rocker boxes, so I hate to say it, but check the leak down in both cylinders. You'll find one that doesn't hold pressure.

Start thinking with your dip stick...

Check oil level... should be about 1/2 inch below the neck.
If thats ok, check your oil line routing....
Yeah yeah I know, their on right,,, check anyway.
You said time was good, did you check your CC breather valve?
If all that is good, then you weren't thinking with your dip stick when you swapped rings.
