tappets 89FXR

Is it possible to change out the tappets without pulling the tappet blocks? My tappets have around 60k on them so it's definite overdue.

No. The tappets blocks have a retaining lip at the top, that stops the lifter from coming out the top, so they'll only come out the bottom. You either have to unbolt the tappet blocks, or remove the cam to drop the tappets.

Taking the bolts out and replacing the gasket is not only inexpensive, but not that much more time comsuming. Make sure not to drop any gasket material in the tappet block hole, and get yourself 3 tappet block alignment screws. I got mine off some dude on Ebag for $ 13.95 shipped.

You'll want to look at the tappet block bore as well, and check for any strange or excessive wear. Replace them if they're worn beyond spec.
