I'm no expert, but I reckon you've got a problem.

Did you find all the loose parts of the lifter that went into the engine?

Make sure you have every little piece of debris, or it will come back to haunt you in a very expensive way...

If you found all the debris, you can replace the cam and lifters and you will be ok.

The early EVOs had lifters that were known to fail, at the roller.

Sometime in the mid `90s they changed the design of the lifter.

The lifters that you can get from the dealer are the upgraded “B” lifters, they are very good units.

How many miles on it? Have the lifters ever been changed? We recommend changing the lifters every 30K miles.

yeah i got all the bits out, its got a different speedo on it showing 13,000 miles but the guy i got it off said to add another 15,000 miles to it. it'll probably explain the "whirring noise" it's had for a while !!!

Don't know if you've finished your rebuild, but remember that the oil pump is fed through that passage at the bottom of the cam compartment. Make sure that there are no lurking pieces of metal in there. Very easy to miss and they will eventually wind up in your oil pump.

yeah it's all done, new set of followers and a new EV 27 cam, done about 500 miles and all is well plus it goes much better.
