No, it is not oiled by the primary. It carries its own lube.
Here's a tip from someone who ran his for 24 years and 180,000 miles: drain the oil and shoot a tube of white lithium grease into the housing instead. It'll last a looooong time, and when it begins to drip because it's thin, its's time to change it.
Personally, I left mine on for that long because it hides behind saddlebags to start with, so appearance is not a factor, and because it makes the chain last forever. I pulled my first chain at 60k miles and found it had stretched 1/2 a link; it was till very usable, but since I already had a new one on, I left it in place.
I just sold it to a member here with the second chain still on it, and still within the adjustment range.
Some guys think you have to take the housing apart to change a tire. Not so; they just never read the book on how to do it. You can see an article on the subject on my website at
