motor sprocket seal

My 89 FXR appears to be leaking oil into the primary. It looks as though it is between the shaft and sprocket spacer. The question is how does this seal work? It looks like it just goes up against the sprocket spacer and not up against the shaft.

Mike, there's an oil seal in there that butts up against the crank bearing.

I don't know how something could be up against the shaft, as you say, because it is located around the shaft and should be slid up against the bearing.

That seal may be leaking, and call it a blessing if that's all it is. Worst case is that your engine has developed the hairline cracks around the bearing support in the engine case that plagues some models. If so, the engine will have to be taken out, cases split, the bearing support cut out and a new one welded in. I know guys who've had it done and it turned out well. I know others who've had it done and it was nothing but grief because the machinist got sloppy in aligning the new bearing insert with the one on the other side of the engine. That makes the crank run sideways, so to speak, and that's not a good thing.

Thanks, hope it's not hairline cracks.

Wouldn't it be better to replace the cases (if cracked)?
