Exhaust "Again" for 1988 FXRS Need to talk Custom

All,
I went down on my 88 FXRS and after a 2 month battle with the insurance company, they have decided to see the light and fix my Iron Horse. So I find out today that Vance & Hines Have discontinued my Pipes, D.S. # V16807 Starightshots. (anybody here want to sell a set of these pipes used?) I also learned from V&H that after this year they are going to discontinue the Shortshots which is the only pipe they now make for FXR's.

So, I do not want the shorties and all I would consider on my bike are Python 3's or V&H both of which seem to not to be in production anymore.

Customizing time..

I need to fit a diffrent set of V&H Straightshots onto my 1988 FXRS and I am looking for the forums knowledge on this matter.

For instance, would an XL set work better than a Dyna set?

Is it possible to just find heat shilds for my set of pipes?

Has anyone ever heard of having the shields brazed to fill the deep scrathes and then ground cleand and polished to be re-chromed?

Is so who could do this work on the original pipes?

Thanks

Tony
Live Long and keep the rubber to the road.

No first hand experience, but have read that Softail pipes work on FXR's, just have to figure out a mounting arrangement which shouldn't be too difficult.

That's correct, I put V&H BigShots from a 86-06 Softail (17903) on my 94 FXLR. They fit nicely and they look/sound great. I made 2 mounting brackets, one attached to the pipes and one attached to the frame, with a 1/4" thick rubber washer sandwiched between them. I would go with the BigShots over the StraightShots, they have larger diameter heat shields for a meaner look. Plus they have a power port connecting them where they come together, and it really does give the engine more power.

Here's a picture of the mounting brackets I made with the rubber washer:

Found a set.... Awesome

It all worked out, as I found a new set of V&H Straightshots on EvilBay.
Gotta love my luck but Exhaust is going to become a big big problem in the near future for FXR owners.
