What years were the FXRs made?
Question on history of FXR's how many, and what years were they made FXR, FXR2, FXR3. What major changes occured between the different models. I know my 85 fxr has a different tranny than my Dads 1992. I thought 84-92 were the years and then dyna glide took over, but I must be wrong because I saw a 99 fxr3, so I'm a little confused.

1982 first year FXR shovelhead
1983 last year FXR shovelhead
1984 first year FXR EVO
1994 Last year production FXR
1995 FXRP - police only year
1996 reported may have also had a police issue but could not find proof
1999 Re-issue FXR3
2000 FXR4 Last year EVO although many believe 1999 was. Had late model 4 piston caliper as all 2000-up models.

Actually both the FXR2 and FXR3 were built in 1999. Birth of HD's CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) unit.

The FXR2, 3, and 4 were all CVO models made in limited numbers in 1999 (FXR2 and 3) and 2000 (FXR4).
As for how many, a while back I asked for and got these numbers for CVO FXR's from HD:

I bought a new FXRS in nov 81 (82 model) it came with factory hi-way pegs and mag wheels not spokes, think that was only difference between fxr and fxrs, the R stood for rubber mounted it was a 5 speed rubber mounted 1340 cc shovelhead,I still have the HD flyer from that year, they made a fxe fxr and fxrs and also they made a few fxrt that had a frame mounted fairing....Tom.

I wanted an FXRT in 84. It took 20 years to get one, but that's what I ride, a 93.

When 1995 was mentioned as a police only year, I meant that the 1994 was the last year for the FXR but they still made an FXRP in 1995. I was not suggesting that 1995 was the first year or the only year for the FXRP. Sorry for the confusion.
Also I this was not meant to be a list of all years and models of FXR's but a basic list.

Don't take offense. Me, I get so little chance to talk in detail about FXR's that I tend to go a little overboard. That's why the first thread I look at on this whole forum is your FXRT build/rebuild thing.

Not a problem at all. Just clearifing. By all means add anything to the list you feel should be added, same goes for HDTwice and anyone else.

I don't mead to highjack. But my FXRS is titled a 1989 model. ( times out of 10 if I order parts for a 1989 they will be wrong. So I have learn to double check everything and most times I order 1990 parts. Any comments or it a normal thing. Or I'm just werid. Not a werido just werid. Ken

Almost all of the motor parts are obsolete. The 1989 motor was a transition motor, internally. Harley went from the 5 piece crank shaft to a three piece crank. The pinion shafts were cast on the flywheels. Before the pinion shaft was case hardened. But when they were cast with the flywheel, it was not cost effective to case harden the entire flywheel. So Harley just surface hardened the shaft area. This proved to be weak and caused the shaft to brake under hard motor operation. Harley had a Soft recall on the 1989 motor (fixed only if the original owner complained or had motor problems). All motors were repaired or replaced with 1990 parts.
I know this because I had a 1989 Ultra and had the cam side shaft shear off and take the bottom end out. Harley replaced the motor with 1990 parts but with the original 1989 VIN.
So it is very hard to find any 1989 motor parts.
This thread is originally from 2007.
