More for powder coating. I really didn't want to take the engine down but I think I'll be glad I did.

Don't powder coat the jugs. Powder coat is one of the worst coatings for parts that radiate heat.

Cold oxide them with copper selenium compound, then hit em with a light clearcoat.

Soda blasting works a lot better than I was expecting.

It took less than 30 seconds to clean half of this intake.

New wheel came today. Kind of expensive but it's hard to find dual flange Wideglide spokes.

I'm having trouble figuring out what kind of jug this is. Does anyone know?

Polishing is a lot of work. I'm halfway done with the rocker boxes. Then I can get started on the dry primary cover, the cam cone, the forks, etc. I'm going to be at this a while.

I like the result of powder coated jugs and soda-blasted heads.

A little too much effort maybe. The rear tank mount gusset didn't sit down on the frame so I needed to fabricate a raised mount. I used a semi circle of tubing and a threaded bung. I didn't like the front mount. It was just a bolt going through the frame with a nylon nut. I thought it would be a cleaner finish to drill and weld bungs. Unfortunately, no shop in town carried threaded bungs so I took some larger ones that I had and borrowed a friend's lathe. I ground the frame down about 1/8" on both sides and drilled out for the modified bungs. It was most of a day's work but it looks much better I think.

I've been having a bugger of a time with identifying the pistons for rings. The bore was checked by the machine shop to be 3.657" so I concluded that I have 3-5/8" bored 030 over. That's easy enough until ordering rings. There's more to ring specs than cylinder bore. The previous owner assured me (twice) that they're S&S pistons. Over on the HD forum, I got 3 people telling me that S&S never stamped the bore overage on the top so they can't be S&S. I called S&S tech support and he agreed with them but told me that I should be able to find ID on the bottom inside. I tried taking pics and, viola, S&S pistons with unusual stampings. Whodathunkit?

I got my front tire today. It's an Avon Speedmaster. From what I've been gathering from other conversations, I'll probably go through a common cycle of running the nostalgic bias ply tires until they're worn enough to rationalize something more modern and then swearing off of bias ply tires for life. YOLO

The nose cone polished up nicely. Only took about an hour trying different wheels and compounds.
