ndmick wants to know Dino or Syn?
1986 fxwg

Well where do I start.I`ve owned this bike since 1986,great bike I have several,I`ve been devorced and married on this bike.Been through hell on this thing.Well in 2005 riding to work a ford expedition decieded he needed McDonalds more than I needed a left foot and tried to kill me.T boneing me and as stated earlier removing my left foot.So after I recovered I decieded to rebuild the old bike.Stroked the engine 96" .Here`s where my problems are decieded to go through transmission 4 speed kicker with belt drive, rotary top,now it just wont shift into 2nd or 3rd with out missing gear.I`ve taken it down 2 times even hauled it over to Pete Hills place here in SC. its better but still missing now and then.I`m not sure what do do?I have a friend back in PA.He would get it right or should I go for a 6 speed?

Sorry to hear of the accident, hope you are doing well.

The 2-3 mis-shift is a somewhat common issue with the 4 speeds. I'll send you a pm with my number if you want detailed understanding of the issue.

As for the 5-6 speed conversion, I did the 5 speed Sputhe and feel it was one of the best upgrades I did.

I agree on the 6 speed. In addition to the obvious added gears, The newer six speeds make less noise, shift incredible smooth and are in general problem free. The good names are Baker and Jims. Beware the garbage, there is a ton of it on the market. Not all 6 speeds are equal. -Ed

Sweet Bike!!!! I have a very similar bike and ran the 4 speed rotary top for years...finally saved the bucks and bought the Baker 6 speed in a 4 speed case....WOW... bolts right in,still looks like 4 speed, still has the kicker but shifts like a dream...smooth as silk and I can see out of my mirrors at 80...worth every penny.
