1975 Shovel

Guys and Gals,

Here's the story, My brother in law has a shovel sitting in the back of the garage that he bought new. It hasn't run for about 7 years and I think it just became my winter project lastnight over way too many Bud Lights. The engine and trans are fresh, but I figure all of the gaskets and seals should be replaced. Other than that and the common wear items, what do you guys suggest? Are there any upgrades that have come around in the last decade that anybody recommends?

I think the primary is already sealed and the engine has been bumped up to a 80ci. The trans is still the factory 4 speed with what he said was a close ratio gear set.

I figure I would ask before I started tearing into it.

Thanks in advance,

Justin

drain the old gas, clean the carb, change the oil, put a fresh battery and gas in and fire it up!! Then ride it a little while before you tear into it. You wil get a better feel for what it does and doesn't need.

I wish I could ride it. Both the front and rear calipers are froze so new front and rear brakes are on order. I don't think there is a stock part left on this bike, so it's going to be a challenge when it comes time for fitting all of the new parts.

Right now it's got a 70's chopper theme to it, and that's how he want to keep it. I just have to make sure it doesn'r leak....too much.

GrayRider will become famous soon enough
Other than what Bob said, I'd pull the plugs and squirt some oil in the cylinders before I started it, if it hasn't run in 7 years.

I wouldn't be concerned about any seals or gaskets until it was run for a while. I had two '75 shovels...the biggest leak problems that I had were pushrod tube seals. I love shovels.

You'll also collect oil under the engine from the chain oiler. Just Gunk underneath it when you wash it.

This is going to be actually fun. I've resorted multiple cars, so a bike should be easier......I hope.

I just want to fix all of the shortcomings that the 70's bikes had. That's the one problem with doing something for somebody in your family. If it doesn't work right, you are going to hear about it on every holiday.

I'll take some pictures when I finally start tearing it apart.

The bike is 35 years old, he should excspect some short comings. Unless he wants to dump big money into it. These bikes are not bringing alot of money. So be careful.
