petcock question

I pulled the tank on my 00 FXDL, but first I tried to drain the tank by removing the fuel line and putting a piece of hose on the petcock then turning fuel on. Nothing came out. Does the stock petcock have to have a suction to pull fuel or is something stopped up?

You would either need a suction or remove the petcock from the tank. They are a vacuum petcock.

Cheers,

I pulled my petcock this weekend, I had to drain thew fuel thru the crossover hose up front (which is not easy, juggling the tank, a gascan witha funnel in the neck, and directing the fuel from one hose and a crossover elbow...lotsa fun, don't try this at home kids.

I found an unbelieveable amount of sand/dirt/paintchips/crap all over my petcock filter. really nasty. Rinsed my tank out best i could, and installed a non-vacume petcock. Bike actually ran much better after that, don't know if the stock valve was not working correctly or if it was all the crap in the tank...But i'm happy now, so i guess it doesn't matter

yeah you need a vaccum or suction something. don't make the mistake I did of trying to syphon it. I didn't get it all and got gas everywhere.

If you are going to remove the tank, the crossover would be the easiset place to drain from. If you are not removing the tank, then it might be at a high point and you likely would not get all the gas. You have to remove the crossover anyway to remove the tank as it is threaded through the frame.
