mufflers on my 2003 FXDL

Hello Everyone,

I noticed that my european 03 FXDL has two different mufflers! The upper one is "65388-97A HDI 98 0227" the lower one is: "65868-97A HDI 98C CATALYST!

I watched inside the two mufflers from the front and they are different, in the one with "catalyst" you can really see the catalyst but not in the other one! I am confused why is there a catalyst in the one but not in the other?

Thanks,
Sven

Lightbulb That's the way they make 'em

Sven,
yes there is only one catalytic converter in a set of two mufflers. Typically, the one for the front jug is equipped with one and that's why it's comes with a heat shield as well. There are two different part ## and there's just nothing wrong with your bike in that area. Maybe once the new emission limits like Euro 3 or so will go in effect, HD will have to throw in a second converter. But until then, enjoy the ride...........

PS: I got rid of the problem altogether and run SE torque mufflers, not too noisy, but work well with my built.

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply! Will it affect my bike in any way if I change the catalyst muffler against one without (beside emissions)?

Danke,
Sven

Sven,
as far as know you can replace your catalytic mufflers with stockers anytime without changing anything else. Check the jet needle type (code # imprinted on the needle,as it could be different for a non catalytic bike, the number for the 2003 FXST without cat is N9E). However you will not get any noticable power gain as the stockers are restrictive anyway. If you are planning on putting on free flowing air cleaners and mufflers, just grab a beer and feed the search engine with 're-jetting' or 'carb mods' and find out about the art of re-jetting a CV carb. I put an end to all this carbs tinkering by putting a Dakota Kid modified carb on the bike and she runs great.
