buckcop wants to know Dino or Syn?
checking engine oil

I just bought a 2005 wide glide but the owners manual was lost during hurricane Katrina. I have not been able to get one from my local dealer yet. Is it suppose to be up right or on the kick stand when checked? I am new and need help.

checking oil

i'm in pretty much the same spot with my 06- i do however have a manual on the way. i am going to go out on a limb here and make an assumption that this machine is similar in those aspects to my yamaha roadstar. when checking the oil on my roadie, it needed to be upright off of the stand. a trick told to me was to remove the dipstick, wipe it clean replace it in the tube and then tip the bike up off of the stand briefly and then lean it back over and remove the dipstick. supposedly it would mark the dipstick with oil during the procedure. if i learn anything before you get a answer from some one who knows for sure i will get back to you.

I can't speak for the 2005 FXDWG but I know the 2000 FXST is off the stand and upright.
I just checked a 2000 Dyna manual I have and it's saying to run the engine 1-2 minutes shut it off and check the oil It doesnt mention anything with regards to being upright.

maybe another wide glide owner will chime in

Despite what your service manual will say. A service bulletin from HD states that all Harley's, regardless of year (Evos, TCs, and Revos), should have their oil checked with the bike upright and level, off the jiffy stand.

filterless is reading this now saying WTF is this?
you don't mention what your checking, must be oil. 04 fxdwg you can check
oil level with bike resting on side/jiffy stand.
cold oil check the level should be between the arrows. hot oil check (after a
good ride) your level will be closer to the full mark altho mine doesn't seem
to change much hot or cold.
make sure filler cap is seated all the way before you pull and check.

For Dyna's with the TC88 or TC96, the engine oil should be checked with the bike sitting on the jiffy stand.
Most Dyna owners run the engine about 1/2qt low, (halfway down the stick), otherwise, the engine has a tendency to puke oil into the air cleaner if you ride it hard on warm days.

My manuel calls for 3 qts with change of oil and filter but I only put 2 1/2 in and it then chks just fine. tdlr PS Trany should be checked upright and hot.

I've copied this from my manaul for you, the correct level is halfway between the arrows:
ENGINE OIL AND FILTER
CHECKING AND ADDING OIL
Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine.
For pre-ride inspection, with motorcycle leaning on jiffy
stand on level ground, oil should register on dipstick
between arrows when engine is cold. Do not add oil to
bring the level to the FULL mark on a COLD engine.

Checking with Cold Engine
1. Unscrew and remove engine oil filler cap
with attached dipstick. Wipe dipstick clean.
2. Reinstall filler cap. Turn filler cap clockwise until it stops.
3. Again, unscrew and remove filler cap and
check oil level on dipstick. If oil level in pan is below lower
mark on dipstick, add enough Harley-Davidson oil to bring
level up between lower mark and cold check level
on dipstick.
NOTE
Be sure to clean oil from dipstick threads. If oil is present on
dipstick threads, it can weep past dipstick o-ring. This condition
may be incorrectly diagnosed as an oil leak.
4. Replace filler cap and screw in securely.

Checking with Warm Engine
Ride motorcycle until engine is warmed up to operating temperature,
then do the following.
1. Idle motorcycle on jiffy stand for 1-2 minutes.
2. Shut motorcycle off and with motorcycle leaning on jiffy
stand on level ground, unscrew and remove engine oil
filler cap with attached dipstick. Wipe dipstick clean.
3. Reinstall filler cap. Turn filler cap clockwise until it stops.
4. Again, unscrew and remove filler cap and
check oil level on dipstick. If oil level in pan is below lower
mark on dipstick, add enough Harley-Davidson oil to bring
level up between lower mark and cold check level
on dipstick.

Gearbox oil:
With motorcycle on a level surface and resting on jiffy
stand, check lubricant level.
a. Insert filler plug/dipstick into transmission fill hole but
do not thread in.
b. Remove filler plug/dipstick and
check lubricant level on dipstick. Lubricant level
should be between upper mark and lower mark. If necessary, add lubricant until level is correct.
7. Install filler plug/dipstick and tighten to 25-75 in-lbs (2.8-
8.5 Nm).

Hope this helps.

I have read two different ways of checking the oil. More confused now. Will call Harley dealer and ask what they recommend for checking engine oil, on stand or straight up. Thanks everyone for the info. I have got a lot to learn.

What Harvey and I wrote is correct. I have an 08 Dyna with a TC96. Oil level is checked warm on the jiffy stand. I keep mine halfway up the crosshatch area. Filling it all the way up causes oil in your air cleaner. Tranny is also checked warm on the jiffy stand. This is right out of the Harley Service Manual for this bike. Other models are different, so be careful who you listen too.

I have a 98 FXD Dyna EVO the manual says to check engine oil on jiffy stand and to check tranny upright.
