I guess if I am just going to pop in out of the blue, I should introduce myself...

Sorry for just jumping in and asking questions/offering opinions...how rude of me

I'm in Michigan, been riding since I was 7 or 8 starting on a RUPP minibike (be nice, this picture was taken in 1980):

Then, to some Honda trail 50s and on to sportbikes (Triumph, Kaw):

to metrics:

to classics (1966 Triumph Bonneville 650 - a true original chopper from the early 70s built on a finch frame):

to my most recent... the 2003 Dyna Lowrider.

I'm a die hard tinkerer, modifier, backyard fabricator, and dreamer...but the only job paying the bills is carpenter. That being said, I have enjoyed modding the FXDL from it's sad state when I bought it:

to an even sadder state over the winter:

to how it sits now:

What you can't see is the Screaming Eagle 95 cubic inch big bore kit, Andrews 37B cams, Screaming Eagle ignition, yost carb kit, etc.

What you can see: Weld Recluse wheels, Chrome calipers and floating rotors, Vance & Hines big radius exhaust, Demon Cycle 3 degree raked 3" over forks with smooth top trees, Magnum Sterling Chromite II braided brake lines and cables, internally wired T-bars, chrome controls/switches/mirrors, removal of the reflectors (there was still some tape residue on the back fender in this picture) and the belt guards etc, Chrome bullet headlight, relocated turn signals in the front with smoked lenses, progressive 411 shocks to drop the back nearly 2", Arlen Ness air intake, not to mention all the 'touring' crap yanked and sold!

I think it looks a little better now.. but I may be biased! Now I just need to find a better photographer... I can't do it justice.

This winters mods will be less cosmetic and MORE POWER!

I'm sorting out whether to do the heads and call it good, or go completely through it with crank mods or replacement, bigger bore (107ci or more). I'm a little disappointed in how it runs now. It's peppy, but not near where I hoped. My retired dad on his stock (except pipes) 06 Fatboy has no problem keeping up with me until we hit the high RPMs (and triple digit speeds).

All suggestions welcome, as well praise/criticism... I'm a die hard internet researcher... always looking and learning.

nice looking setup. that one pic where you describe "a sad state" - to me that's when you know the fun is about to begin. nothing more fun then breaking it down and building it back up.

Nice Harley. I started on a Rupp mini bike too but back in '67 they were much cruder: no suspension front or rear 2 1/4 horse Tecumseh that was good for 30 mph.

oh I agree. I called it my "harley starter kit." I rode it from Atlanta, GA back here to Michigan that way. The handlebar tassles, however, never left the parking lot where I picked it up.

I also started on a Rupp in the late 60's. It was a Roadster with a 3 1/2 hp Tecumseh. Had a blast on that thing.

Welcome.

not sure if mine was a roadster or trailmaster... it appears to be 1970+ though
